Taranto: Nothing to Fear but These Idiots. Dems fault Bush for thwarting an attack on L.A.
OpinionJournal ^ | Feb. 10, 2006 | JAMES TARANTO

Posted on 02/10/2006 9:20:40 PM PST by FairOpinion

The Los Angeles Times reports on Democratic reaction to President Bush's speech yesterday, in which he described how the government foiled an al Qaeda plot to fly hijacked planes into L.A.'s Library Tower:

"The details did little to counter skepticism from Democrats and some law enforcement officials who have questioned whether the reported scheme had ever been put into operation before it was thwarted."

So we're supposed to wait until after terror plots have been put into operation before thwarting them?

"I can't think of a governmental reason to disclose these details at this time to the general public. Clearly, the goal was to create headlines," said Sherman, who monitors security matters as the ranking Democrat on the House subcommittee on international terrorism and nonproliferation."

But it is very helpful to disclose crucial details about the terrorist surveillance program?

Taranto makes the points that the Republicans all should be making about the Dems.

I don't understand why current mayor of LA was offended that he's not briefed for something that happened in 2002.

But I heard mentioned on TV -- I think Ollie North said that the White House DID call Villaraigosa's office the day before to let him know what's in Bush's speech and apparently his staff didn't tell him.

It's obvious he was offended because the WH did not tell him that they would be talking about it on National TV without first letting him know. It made him and LA look stupid and frankly, I don't blame him. The WH should have told him they planned on talking about it.

Typical Rat. An attack that suceeds is Bush's fault, an attack that was thwarted never existed in the first place.

This a national emergency. Of course, Bush is going to ignore it and FEMA will be slow to react, but something must be done, and, done quickly.

I was waiting for the breathless wire service article about Governor Schwarzenegger being upset about not being briefed about something that happened a year before he took office.

Maybe Bush should contact all possible future mayors of LA and let them know that there was a plot that was thwarted while one of the predecessors was in office.

And not only that he wasn't in office, why should he act surprised? I thought I heard that his Senator Feinstein says it is old news and evil Bush and Rove are just trotting it out again in 2006 to "scare people" into voting for them. Huh? I thought GWB couldn't run again . . . . /sarcasm

The white house had notified his staff. Turns out, he was fully briefed and has changed his story. Now he is upset that he didn't get a direct call from the white house. The fact that they had informed his homeland security liaison and that individual had emailed the Mayor on Wednesday is not sufficient for Dems.

He has been caught red-handed lying about the events and is getting crucified by the LA media!

So did the mayor of L.A. have anything negative to say about the would-be terrorists? (He's more p*ssed off over not getting a phone call than over the fact that someone wanted to destroy L.A. Idiot!)

They did tell the mayor. Fault lies on the mayor's staff for not informing the mayor.

You want to know what's nice about this? Bush has a story to tell every week about terror aimed at us. Let's say about every Thursday afternoon after blowhards are on their 2nd adult beverage and whatever.

First of all, I don't understand the indignation for something that transpired before Villaraigosa took office. Secondly, it's been reported about the foiled attack. Thirdly, the White House said they did contact Villaraigosa's office. Fourth, Hahn, the mayor at the time, was informed about the planned attack. I heard on Al Rantel's show today that Mayor Hahn was on Foxnews this morning.
Frankly, I think this is just b.s. from Villaraigosa trying to make a big deal and elevate himself to a higher status than he really has.

What's important about a current mayor's opinion about something that was prevented during a previous mayor's administration? Why would even the previous mayor need to be notified?

The pettiness of these people knows no bounds.

I saw this interesting article posted:

Terrorist Blamed His Failure on Bush

http://www.townhall.com/opinion/columns/terencejeffrey/2006/02/11/186087.html

Opponents of the Patriot Act and the National Security Agency program that targets al-Qaida-linked communications in and out of the United States should consider the Portland Seven terrorists, one of whom blamed their failure on President Bush.
