Americans are taking sleeping pills like never before, fueled by frenetic workdays that do not go gently into a great night's sleep, and lulled by a surge of consumer advertising that promises safe slumber with minimal side effects.
About 42 million sleeping pill prescriptions were filled last year, according to the research company IMS Health, up nearly 60 percent since 2000.

Everything is getting better, why would people need sleep aids?
America has the highest rate of mental illness in the developed world, so this really isn't that surprising.
Better living thru chemistry. There's a pill for all your needs!
Remember, kids - JUST SAY NOT SO (some) DRUGS!!
And do as I say, not as I do!!

"Remember, kids - JUST SAY NO TO (some) DRUGS!! "
I shouldn't have taken all that Advil this AM.

A hour with good book and two fingers of Chivas Regal on the rocks.
You'll sleep like a baby
My Missus was in renal failure for 6 months. They won't rule out the usage of OTC sleep aids + Ibuprofen as a possible cause.
You don't sleep with a snorer or a thrasher, do you? A melatonin and a Tylenol PM work wonders for me.
Sylvia Plath is one of my favorite poets.
I am currently reading a "restored" version of "Ariel and Other Poems." Brilliant.
The cure is exercise and getting away from the computer......

I'm lucky in that.
Two fingers of vodka and a sip of Benedryl and it is lights out.
(Note to worriers, this is also called Nyquil)
3mg melatonin and thats all she wrote for me ... only downside, is you get wierd dreams.

Ironically, I never needed them when I was drinking 2-3 pots a day.
Did I mention that I hate my doctor? Sure, it's not his fault that I'm a dumbass who can't do anything in moderation but I'm going to blame him anyway.
Benadryl works well - it's cheap, and no Rx is needed. A nice glass of Chardonnay or Pinot Noir also works nicely. It's all in the process, the ritual, y'know. As I really think about this, back in the days when I read my children bedtime stories, I always fell asleep before they did. Hmm. Add Golden Books to my list of undocumented sleep aid treatments. ;o)
The USA may have the highest incidence of MH problems, but that's because we actually try to detect, diagnose and treat. That doesn't mean we're crazier than the rest of the world. Just look at the wackos burning down embassies on any given day or chopping off heads. Now that's some mental illness for you!
What kind of OTC sleep aid did she use? Ibuprofen makes me bleed in gut.
