'Bomb' nut says I'm sorry

and SUN ONLINE REPORTER

A MUSLIM protester who dressed as a suicide bomber today apologised 'wholeheartedly' to the families of the July 7 bomb victims.

Omar Khayam, 22, claimed it was not his intention to cause offence.

But he said his protest was still valid because of the hurt caused to Muslims across the world following the publication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.

The Prime Minister's official spokesman today said the Government would support the police if they decided to take action against any protesters over scenes outside the Danish Embassy in London on Friday and Saturday.

And Scotland Yard has set up a special squad to investigate if any offence has been committed.

Khayam said: "I found the pictures deeply offensive as a Muslim and I felt the Danish newspaper had been provocative and controversial, deeply offensive and insensitive.

"Just because we have the right of free speech and a free media, it does not mean we may say and do as we please and not take into account the effect it will have on others.

"But by me dressing the way I did, I did just that, exactly the same as the Danish newspaper, if not worse.

"My method of protest has offended many people, especially the families of the victims of the July bombings.

"This was not my intention.

"What happened in July was a tragedy and un-Islamic.

"I do not condone these murderous acts, do not support terrorism or extremism and would like to apologise unreservedly and wholeheartedly to the families of the victims.

"I understand it was wrong, unjustified and insensitive of me to protest in this way."

Asked if he would carry out a similar protest again, he replied: "No, I would not do it again, it has caused offence to a lot of people.

"I did not want to provoke any violence, it was just to make a point."

Khayam last night came forward to admit he was the "fake terrorist" pictured with a band of twisted extremists in London.

And he vowed yesterday: "I would be prepared to wear that jacket again."

The call for police to arrest him and other chanting yobs at the demo came from all quarters.

Inayat Bunglawala, of the Muslim Council of Britain, said: "It is time the police acted."

Khayam, a building student from Bedford, told the Sun last night: "I’ve done nothing wrong."

Amazingly, he added: "I wasn’t trying to appear like a terrorist at all.

"Yes I was on the protest but I didn’t even carry any placards or shout any slogans.

"I can’t believe all the attention that I’ve received as I didn’t consider it such a big thing.

"I admit that it may have appeared in a bit of a military style and a bit provocative but that’s not illegal in this country."

Khayam was even condemned by one of the organisers of the demos, the Hizb ut-Tahrir group.

Taji Mustafa said: "The image of a man dressed as a suicide bomber is not one we support."

Asgaqr Bukhari, chairman of the Muslim Public Affairs Committee, said: "All the placards and chants were disgraceful."

What do you think of Muslim cartoon row demos?

I think the police should have taken action against the demonstrators. The placards held about beheading people were outrageous. They were inciting violence and the police must take appropriate action in the future.

M Chaudhary,
East London

I think it is totally unbelievable the demonstrators were not arrested. How dare these protesters carry banners praising 9/11 and 7/7 and glorifying terrorists who carried out these atrocities.

Matt H,
Ipswich

Good people will do good things, evil people will do evil things but religion makes good people do evil things.

Hannah Simmonds

There is one word for those who praised the terrorists during these demonstrations – scum.

Byron

It is just so sad that the police are so totally useless yet again but did anyone really think that it would be any different?

Massacre ... scene at King’s Cross
after 7/7 bombing last year

RELATIVES of July 7 bomb victims told last night of their disgust at the hate-filled messages brandished and shouted by Muslim extremists in London.

Kim Beer, 47, was among millions of people appalled by calls for murder and terrorism — and the sickening sight of a protester dressed as a suicide bomber — during demonstrations against blasphemous cartoons.

Scotland Yard last night said it would try to identify and nick the “bomber” after being bombarded with hundreds of complaints from people who could not understand why he hadn’t been arrested immediately.

Phil
Killed ... son Phil

Angry Kim, whose son Phil, 22, died in the 7/7 suicide Tube blast between King’s Cross and Russell Square, summed up the mood.

She said: “It is an insult to the memory of every bomb victim that we allow people dressed as suicide bombers to parade around our streets.”

Scotland Yard was also blasted for the failure to seize ANY of the hate mob during the demos on Friday and Saturday.

But an Irishman and a German were arrested for handing out copies of the offending cartoons. They were later released.

The Yard responded to complaints from the public by saying its Public Order Crime Unit would study video footage of the demonstrations taped by specialist officers.

It also issued a statement saying: “We will make arrests in the most appropriate manner and at the appropriate time.”

The protests were over publication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad as a terrorist — first in a Danish newspaper then in others across Europe.

And the fanatics created a sea of hate outside the Danish embassy in Sloane Street, central London.

Shadow Home Secretary David Davis also called on the police to arrest those who threatened violence in the demos.

He said: “Some of these placards are incitement to violence, and indeed incitement to murder.”

Labour MP David Winnick said: “The cartoons were deeply offensive to hundreds of millions of Muslims. But it is unacceptable that, on British soil, there should be thugs demonstrating for people to be beheaded and actually glorifying the atrocities of July 7.”

Shadow Attorney General Dominic Grieve said: “What took place was outrageous. It’s a clear breach of the criminal law.”

Kim
Victim's mum ... Kim

Victim’s mum Kim, of Borehamwood, Herts, said: “It seems crazy they are allowed to get away with it.

“Surely they can be arrested for inciting hatred.”

And Dania Gorodi, 48, whose sister Michelle Otto, 46, died in the Russell Square explosion last July, said: “It is scandalous the Government is standing by and letting these people make threats against this country.”

Danes were last night urged to get out of Lebanon after a mob stormed the Danish embassy and torched it.

Despite having tear gas and water cannon, 2,000 police were still unable to stop a group of protesters forcing their way into the Beirut building.

It had already been evacuated and nobody was hurt. But Lebanese PM Fouad Siniora said: “This has nothing to do with Islam. Prophet Muhammad cannot be defended this way.”

Danish Foreign Minster Per Stig Moeller appealed for calm.

He said: “It is a critical situation, it is very serious.”

Hundreds staged a rally in Afghanistan, and Iran recalled its ambassador to Denmark.

An Iraqi militant group called for attacks on Danish targets

ABOVE are the faces of hate that shame the religion of Islam.

Contorted with anger and preaching violent revenge, they have insulted millions of decent people in Britain with their vile actions.

All the fanatics have achieved is to show their hatred of democracy and free speech.

Today The Sun calls on its readers to name and shame them.

Uh, sure you weren't.

And Elvis impersonators are not trying to look like Elvis either.

This guy is either flat-out stupid or a liar.

After reading his rambling gibberish, I conclude that he's unquestionably an idiot.

Right. His intention was to have a real bomb, but he couldn't get his hands on one. Rotten scum.
