Thanks for the info. Why am I not surprised that screwing the taxpayers was a part of it?

You didn't hurt my feelings at all, I speak ill of Detroit on a regular basis. The thing is, it's a damn, dirty shame what it's come to. There are some absolutely fabulous restaurants there and some of the most beautiful architecture to be seen but it's all being wasted and thrown away and will remain that way as long as it's evidentally brain dead residents continue to vote in the same slimy, scum bags they have been for the past 50 years.

used the offer of the Super Bowl to blackmail the area into constructing a new stadium. You're mistaken. The stadium cost $360 million. Of that, the Lions/Ford family paid $300 million. The State of Michigan and the City of Detroit contributed nothing. Wayne County voters put a tax on hotel rooms to fund $60 million for land clearance and utilities. And, in 20 years, the County will own the stadium. As stadiums go, Ford Field is one of the least government-subsidized in the country.

When you drive east from Washtenaw to Wayne, on 94, during a storm, you will know the exact instant that you cross the county line.

That was the only reason to watch the super bowl before, every few years they would be playing in snow!
If I had a tivo, I would set it up to record the commercials for a later view.
Beyond that I could care less as long as the Steelers win.
(only because that may help Swann in the Gov. race)

The best-laid plans of mice, men, and the NFL. Didn't Rozelle swear no more cold-weather Super Bowls after the Silverdome one?

They also had one in Minneapolis back in '92.

Was that Rozelle or Tagliabue that made that colossal error in the Rollerdome?

My question as well. What the heck possessed them to have the game in Detroit? Even Chicago, which also has cold and snow, but has great music and some fantastic restaurants, would seem a better choice.I have always thought Denver would be a good choice. Denver has a good stadium, good weather, good city stuff, and skiing this time of year too. But they would never risk a Super Bowl there because it is an outdoor stadium.

I'm sure there are a lot of vacant lots in downtown Detroit Not only are there plenty of vacant lots, there's an abundance of vacant buildings. So, if all those fans get snowed in at the game, it's probably only a block or two to a nice big empty building to sleep in. They will have to supply their own water, windows and wood, however!
Whoever here called Detroit a sewer was pretty close. Detroit and Wayne County suck waaaay to much state money in...with little to show for it.

I think it was awarded while Rozelle was still commissioner.

And they had a blizzard at that one, too.We watched something about the last Detroit Superbowl. They said many fans couldn't make it and a lot of the players were late, too. So they gave them another one...

Why force fans to travel to some freezing sewer of a city? They spent 350 million on a new stadium to replace the old pontiac silverdome. The NFL promised a superbowl there in return. It is the same deal for MLB's all star game in july. Build a new stadium and you get a superbowl or all star game thrown in the deal. In the case of the NHL pitt penguins, casino gambling will kick in 290 million for a new staduim if you give them slots in Pittsburg.
