With strong wind and 5 to 8 inches of snow forecast, snow removal crews girded for a winter storm as thousands of fans headed downtown on Super Bowl eve.
There also are hundreds of city workers and volunteers ready to work through the night to clear sidewalks so fans can get to Sunday's title game at Ford Field, which has a steel roof.
The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for Detroit through noon Sunday, predicting 5 to 8 inches of snow before the storm passes. The heaviest amounts were to fall Saturday night, with gusts up to 40 mph.
"I would definitely say that road conditions are going to deteriorate quickly," said Karen Kahl, a meteorologist with the weather service office in suburban Oakland County.
The snow comes after the third-warmest January on record in Detroit, with high temperatures in the 40s most of the month.

Oh yeah, that'll work. (sarcasm off)
why they don't simply play the Stupid Bowl in Miami or the Rose Bowl (every year) is quite beyond my ability to comprehend. Why force fans to travel to some freezing sewer of a city?
They do that all the time where I live. The snow just ends up in mounds and piles outside of town.
Unfortunately for the diehard pigskin fan, the game is indoors.
Football is more exciting when it's played outdoors in the muck, mud, and snow on natural grass.
My question as well. What the heck possessed them to have the game in Detroit? Even Chicago, which also has cold and snow, but has great music and some fantastic restaurants, would seem a better choice.
They'd been calling for it to start since one this afternoon and so far all it's doing is raining.
This "storm" is on its way there via Northern Indiana right now.The dirty little secret is that its been so warm for so long there isn't a bit of it sticking on roadways, which is key to having any problems. The weather service guys got bored.
Which restaurants Downtown have you not liked?
Perhaps the plan went awry.
Still praying for the safety of that whole thing.
May any untoward plan for harm be exposed and thwarted absolutely.
This compares with Mayor Nagin's plan to hold back the tide with 100 sheets of plywood.
I would think they would need an awful lot of trucks. Anyway, I'm sure there are a lot of vacant lots in downtown Detroit that they could use without trucking it out too far.
Blizzard Bowl.. Just BBBBBRRRrrrrr.. Win Baby!
Go
NFC
Hawks!
Will someone explain to mean why they would ever have the Super Bowl in a northern climate in January even if it is in a dome? I think it is stupid and why not give the fans a "real" vacation where it is warmer?
My youngest daughter, who is now married and out of the house, annually went to a different locale for her church youth group. Every year they held the weeklong event at a new location. One year they held it in Detroit.
I wouldn't let her go.
Actually... a blizzard would be good. It'll keep the low-life hunkered-in.
Yeah! Indoors..the wusses! Why don't they play it outside like real men....in Miami!/sarcasm
Believe there are some "vacation"-type activities available nearby in Canada.
As I recall, the Super Bowl was also held in Detroit in the early '80s. And they had a blizzard at that one, too.
