Forms of intolerance
boston.com ^ | February 4, 2006

Just as the demand from Muslim countries for European governments to punish papers that printed the cartoons shows a misunderstanding of free societies, publishing the cartoons reflects an obtuse refusal to accept the profound meaning for a billion Muslims of Islam's prohibition against any pictorial representation of the prophet. Depicting Mohammed wearing a turban in the form of a bomb with a sputtering fuse is no less hurtful to most Muslims than Nazi caricatures of Jews or Ku Klux Klan caricatures of blacks are to those victims of intolerance. That is why the Danish cartoons will not be reproduced on these pages.

This is another reason for the insignificance of the MSM. By not publishing the news, more people will turn to the Internet for the truth. It is the only place to see the cartoons now.

Let me try to decode this with my dhimmitude dictionary.

"We cower in fear of islam, and our apologies are extend to all of the peaceful followers of islam. Please, take our wives as payment for our service to you all."

There, I think that's it.

Apropos of the Nazis and KKK, has the Globe codemned the vile caricatures of Jews produced in the Islamic media, or certain revolting caricatures of Dr. Condoleezza Rice produced in this country? Didn't think so.....

The Boston Globe's greatest value (Jeff Jacoby's columns excepted) is in lining the bottom of birdcages.

Translation:

"You can freely condemn anything as long as it's not politically correct. Catholics, Christian Fundamentalists, Episcopalians, Christians generally, white males, and conservatives of all stripes are fair game.

"But just now, Islam is on the politically correct list, along with Native Americans, African Americans, women, queers, South Sea Islanders, and Inuit. Oh, yes, please don't criticize the Aztecs for human sacrifices or for drawing cords with thorns on them through their tongues and penises. Those are legitimate aspects of their culture, which must be respected."

Depicting Mohammed wearing a turban in the form of a bomb with a sputtering fuse is no less hurtful to most Muslims than Nazi caricatures of Jews or Ku Klux Klan caricatures of blacks are to those victims of intolerance.

The anonymous writer makes a false analogy in attempt to support his argument. The analogy actually refutes his argument.

Here's why and how:

Nazi caricatures of Jews would either be used to remind people to never forget the evil of the Nazis or the caricatures would be used to support the evil of Nazis. Ku Klux Klan caricatures of blacks would be used to remind people to never forget the evil of the the Ku Klux Klan. or the caricatures would be used to support the evil of the Ku Klux Klan.

Make what you will of the caricatures -- a reminder to never forget or support for their respective evils -- the Nazis and Ku Klux Klan are evil. What they are is what they are. What is, is.

That is the analogy to Mohamed, Allah and the Qur'an: promoters of evil -- kill all the infidels!

The anonymous writer backed by the Boston Globe inverts reality and puts a smiley face on evil. The writer and Boston Globe cannot hide the reality of evil. Especially when their blindness causes them to create an analogy that starkly shows that Mohamed is in the same group with Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan.

Except they object to all depictions, so this is a lie. And why stop at cartoons? Taking Islam to task over their beliefs on gays or women must also be hurtful. Will the Globe refrain from criticizing those things as well? This is just knee-jerk political correctness composed of the idea that when anyone, ANYONE, nonwhite comes in conflict with the whites, the nonwhites are always right. This isn't about religion for the Globe, it's about race.

DANISH EMBASSY BURNED in Syria. Gateway Pundit has a roundup. This really is a case of civilization against the barbarians. The good news is that moderate Muslims are standing up for civilization:

The Danish press has also paid very little attention to the representatives of a group of 80 immigrants who have expressed their support of Jyllands-Posten. A statement by the group placed on the internet carries the caption "We must condemn Islamist threats against free speech." It goes on to accuse the Islamists of "viewing any criticism or any making fun of the Islamic religion as an affront and an insult to Muslims. In this way they want to prevent any human being from questioning the Islamic religion and its holy book and the prophet Muhammad. ... With the same argument Islamic regimes and other forces in the Middle Eastern and Arabic countries have killed thousands of people and issued fatwas against authors, journalists and artists."

The bad news is that the Boston Globe is siding with the barbarians, comparing the Danish cartoonists to Nazis. Just look at the photo and decide who really deserves that comparison. Michael Graham is unhappy with the Globe, too.

The funny thing is that the Globe views fundamentalist Christians as a god-besotted threat to liberty, but makes excuses for people like this.

UPDATE: Ed Morrissey has more thoughts. And Michelle Malkin has a must-see video presentation. And a reader points out that the Boston Globe was defending "Piss Christ" artist Andres Serrano's right to federal funding back in 1990. Apparently, standards of decency have "evolved" at the Globe, or perhaps it's just a measure of who they're actually afraid of.

David Bernstein has more on double standards.

MORE: Ashish Hanwadikar says the Europeans are hypocritical in a different way.

And Ed Driscoll has much more, including a look at Serrano's more recent employment.

Plus, Tigerhawk looks at appeasement and wonders why it remains so popular. "This has been a long time coming -- after the Rushdie fatwa, the West cannot claim that it isn't on notice. It will be a long time in the undoing, too."

STILL MORE: A Jordanian newspaper is braver than the Globe:

Meanwhile, a Jordanian gossip tabloid on defiantly published three of the cartoons that have triggered outrage in the Arab and Muslim world.

"Muslims of the world, be reasonable," said the editor-in-chief of the weekly independent newspaper Al-Shihan in an editorial alongside the cartoons, including the one showing the Muslim religion's founder wearing a bomb-shaped turban.

(Via All Things Beautiful).

Much more here.

EVEN MORE: Of course, the brave Jordanian editor has been arrested:

A Jordanian newspaper editor sacked after publishing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad has been arrested.

Jihad Momani is accused of insulting religion under Jordan's press and publications law.

The newspaper had fired him after he decided to reproduce the cartoons - originally printed in Denmark - which have caused a global storm of protest.

Pathetic.

AND MORE STILL: Reader Kathleen St. Onge emails: "Unsurprisingly, I didn't see any protest babes in the photo you posted. As such, I have to conclude that this is a movement of losers."

Yes. Angry, bitter losers. But potentially dangerous ones.

Intolerance?

Smoke billowed today from the Danish Consulate in downtown Beirut, Lebanon, where hundreds of demonstrators protested a Danish newspaper's publication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed. Islamic anger over the depictions of the Mohammed is boiling over into violence around the world.

England Protesters chant slogans outside the French embassy in London denouncing cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed.

Iraq Sunni Muslims burn Danish products in a bonfire Friday in Baghdad in protest of cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed first published in a Danish newspaper and then in other European publications.

West Bank Members of Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades burn the Danish flag near Ramallah in protest of European newspapers that published cartoons depicting Mohammed. Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades is a military offshoot of the former Palestinian ruling Fatah Party.

Thousands of angry demonstrators storm the Danish embassy in Damascus, Syria, on Saturday
