We should have learned by now that government is a terrible steward of competition. Its natural impulse is to regulate or manage, when the best it could do is get out of the way. This is especially true when rapid technological change disrupts an industrial sector, like telecommunications, that for decades operated under a restrictive regulatory regime based on the premise all we needed was one provider. With deployment of high-speed fiber optic networks, broadband providers, phone companies and even power companies are poised to enter the local video market, finally offering American families a competitive alternative that will drive innovation in the industry and deliver lower prices.

Why?
My experience with the corrupt Adelphia, and DTV's cheaper.
Dish is fine. I got DTV because it had the NFL package, unlike Dish.
IIRC, Dish and Direct are owned by the same company.
The biggest problem with DirecTV is their internet package is at least twice as expensive as cable or DSL internet - you can get cheaper TV with Dish, but you may be unable to get local stations unless there is no way in hell to get a glimmer of a signal via antenna, and the internet service, while decent, is generally slower than cable and the whole deal is susceptible to bad weather. I've lost reception for an hour at a time because of storms south of me, when it wasn't affecting my personally. A good cable system is a lot more stable and provides better internet speeds.
I have nothing but good to say about Dish Network. I have had my system for nearly ten years now. It's not perfect, but far better than cable, and less expensive than DirecTV.
I have persuaded at least three other families to go Dish, and they have been equally happy.
Go Dish Network!
Nope. Dish tried to buy Direct, but it never happened.
My cable company announce an upcoming rate increase in its last invoice. While my cable is not perfect, I love the speed of a cable modem, and not losing my programming during storms.
I'm OK with that. The service has been exceptionally good, especially compared to our local cable company. I love having lots of stereo channels, being the audio snob that I am.
DirecTV is raising the price of its Total Choice 155-channel package by 7.1 percent to $44.99, while Douglas County-based EchoStar's Dish Network is boosting its America's Top 60 package by 9.4 percent to $34.99.
Most larger TV markets have locals now w/satellite. It's an extra $5 a month or something.
Agreed. I just find DirectTV more reliable than cable, at least where I live. I just got sick of my cable going out at various times for no obvious reason. Of course, our service was from Adelphia and it was run by some pretty corrupt people.
i got dish network, and after a few teething problems my first week, it has been great.
(Problem was caused by a defective piece of hardware that burned out a week in)
