Deputy's Gunfire Looks Like a Crime to Some (Chino, CA LEO named by LA Times)
LA Times ^ | Matt Lait and Lance Pugmire

A San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy who shot a 21-year-old Air Force security officer in an incident captured by a video camera appears to have violated accepted police tactics and may have committed a criminal offense, experts in the use of force by police said Wednesday.

~snip~

San Bernardino County sheriff's officials have refused to release the name of the deputy, although state law makes the identity of law enforcement officers involved in shootings a matter of public record.

A source close to the investigation confirmed the identity of the deputy as Ivory J. Webb IV, 45.

Answering the front door of Webb's home, a woman said the deputy, currently on paid administrative leave, was not willing to discuss the shooting.

On top of all this, the witness who video taped this says he was stopped 3 times in the 12 hours following his turning over the video to law enforcement and his car searched thoroughly each time. Smells like a cheese store in Denmark.

After the first seach, he should have put the car in the garage and stayed there before something similar to the incident happened to him. Apparently, there's need for some serious housecleaning in the department.

The video is awful. I was very skeptical until I saw the tape. The officer needs to be in jail. He's a scumbag POS who doesn't deserve either a badge or freedom. Here is a copy for freepers who haven't seen it.

I watched it again this morning with the sole purpose of proving to me the LEO's innocence (I awoke with a guilty conscience for leaning toward his guilt yesterday after seeing the video just once). My conscience has been eased.

Judging by the video, this was attempted murder, pure and simple.

I am very supportive of the police; like to give them the benefit of the doubt in their very difficult duties. However, it looks bad for this LEO on the videotape. Thank God, the airman is in stable condition. May he recovery rapidly from his injuries.

Well, it definitely doesn't smell like a cheese store in Bolton.

In Texas, we don't just send people like this scumbag deputy (who apparently "lost" his in-car cam tape) to jail. We send them to jail and then execute them for murder.

If I recall correctly, murder under color of authority is an automatic death sentence in Texas.

I've seen this video. Unless it's been edited, it looks like an unprovoked assault (by the cop) with a deadly weapon. If this is the case, the crook needs some serious jail time. Unfortunately, I'll bet that the prosecutor will come up with some ch!ck&nsh!t excuse not to press charges.

I watched it last night on Hanity and Dullard. The deputy is a mental case considering he ordered the Airman to his feet and shot him for complying. I hope he is dumped off in Falluja or maybe the Afgan mountains.

Where are all the cop supporters that flamed me two weeks ago because I said the kid in the Florida school shooting was murdered. It happens more than you know, and this video is an example. This video is disgusting. I hope this cop goes to jail for a long time.

Really? I did not know that.

Blowing it this bad usually indicates a back story for the LEO. I'll bet there is some history or training difficulties noted that never got properly flagged. Probably deep issues in the department leadership and supervision as well.

Pretty much sums up the mindset.

"On top of all this, the witness who video taped this says he was stopped 3 times in the 12 hours following his turning over the video to law enforcement and his car searched thoroughly each time."

He should have given the tape to the media. Why did he turn it over to the people who committed the crime?

The prosecutor should know better, since the FBI is involved. If the locals don't do it, the Feds *will*.

I don't know. My limited experiences with good cops versus bad cops runs about 50/50. (Most of the "good" experiences were when I had summoned them myself or in a non-crime way, such as educational efforts, community projects, etc.)
