Napolitano, Hayworth Criticize Bush on Illegal Immigration
Busienss Journal ^ | February 1 2006 | Mike Sunnucks

Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano and Scottsdale Congressman J.D. Hayworth -- intense rivals on opposite sides of the political spectrum -- both hit President Bush on immigration in the wake of Tuesday's State of the Union address.

The Arizona governor faulted Bush for not taking action on illegal immigration and for not laying out more specifics on immigration in his Tuesday night speech before Congress.

Bush voiced support for a guest worker program, increased enforcement of immigration laws and said he opposed amnesty for illegals already in the U.S.

But the Republican president did not lay out any specifics to obtain those goals.

"I was very disappointed," said Napolitano, a Democrat.

Hayworth, a Republican representing Tempe and Scottsdale, opposes guest worker planned backed by the Bush administration and by business. Hayworth said he backs Bush on other key issues such as Iraq and tax cuts, but not on the border front.

"I cannot agree with the President's approach to illegal immigration. We must not surrender to the illegal invasion of our country," said Hayworth in a statement. "A guest worker plan is unfair to American workers and would lead to a permanent underclass of workers separated from the rest of American by language, culture, and income."

Hayworth considered challenging Napolitano in this year's race for governor but opted not to run. The two could face off down the road in a possible U.S. Senate contest.

Napolitano favors a guest worker program. She said the Republican-controlled U.S. Congress needs to pass comprehensive immigration reform, including a guest worker program put forward by U.S. Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Edward Kennedy, D-Mass.

The governor also wants more federal resources and manpower allocated to border states such as Arizona. Napolitano has written Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, asking for federal money to pay for Arizona National Guard troops at the Mexican border. She's also written the Bush administration, asking for reimbursement for health care and law enforcement costs of illegal immigration and for specific numbers of border security deployments in the state.

A guest worker program that lets illegals stay is surrender, couldn't agree more.

Napolitano found a date to the Governor's Ball yet? Maybe Janet Reno is available.

I heard JD Hayworth on G.Gordon Liddy's show this morning talking about this very thing. He was extremely articulate, passionate, logical - I was very very favorably impressed with him.

HEY! Here is an idea. Actually put so legislation in front of the Congress scumbags. Amazing how the whiners NEVER ever wonder why the political whores like Hayworth and Napolitano never DO anything. Instead of whining endlessly at Bush how about you use that Co Equal Branch of the Govt, the US Congress, to actually DO something about the problem for a change? Amazing how they ALL demand that the President Come to them on Wiretaps, or Judaical Appoints or WOT et al but NEVER ever can DO anything about even the most BASIC problem without Bush there holding their hands. QUIT WHINING and DO SOMETHING Congress Scum

And he is soooo right. Bush and his cronies are pro-OPEN BORDERS and we know why. It is a travesty upon America and a huge danger to our security. The magnitude of the politically-driven irresponsibility is astounding. Our borders remain wide open, our contry continues to flood with Mexican criminals, and honest taxpaying REAL American citizen is being screwed blind.

Thank you. Hayworth in one breath says Bush didn't lay out the details in his speech and in the next breath says he doesn't like Bush's plan. Which is it? Has he seen Bush's plan or not? Bush has discussed the details in other speeches 5 times since Jan 2004. Bush submitted proposals in Jan and Nov 2004, both of which were declared DOA by both sides of the aisle. It is now up to Congress to come up with a plan. Besides, a SOTU address is not intended for laying out details of particular programs.

Nothing gets me angrier about this whole government in general and its nonchalant attitude toward open borders and mass illegal immigration. They don't appear to notice what once peaceful communities are going through and how it's tearing many of them apart. Just look at Long Island and you can see what the rest of the country will be experiencing themselves eventually.

Yup I know, it's so easy to find similar examples and as they say, "so goes California so does the rest of the nation."

Rumor has it Cheney has been lobbying the Senate fiercely to pass an amnesty/guest worker program. This administration is dead serious about getting one through even if no details were laid out in the SOTU speech.

Deport all illegals held in jails/prisons to their countries of origin. Should help the overcrowding problem and reduce the burden to the taxpayer.

The prez sounds like the typical OBL with this line. Evidently he doesn't know what "illegal" means either.

"
". We hear claims that immigrants are somehow bad for the economy -- even though this economy could not function without them."

Illegal immigration if not stopped will destroy this country. It's something I've believed since the 1980s when I saw it firsthand in Arizona.

The 1986 reform bill was an attempt to get it under control but it failed miserably because there was and still is no enforcement. Now they want to do it all over again.

It doesn't matter to me who the president is, I'd feel the same way about it and if someone wants to call me a liberal or whatever name it doesn't matter because my opinion on the issue will never change.
