Wounded ABC team on way to hospital in U.S.
CNN ^ | 31 January 2006 | CNN

ABC News anchor Bob Woodruff and video journalist Doug Vogt were headed to the United States on Tuesday for treatment of wounds they sustained Sunday in a roadside bomb attack in Iraq.

Woodruff, Vogt and about 30 members of the U.S. military were accompanied on the trip by a critical care air transport team -- a doctor, a nurse and a respiratory technician -- on a specially outfitted military plane that is essentially a flying intensive care unit.

[. . .] The two journalists are being transferred from the largest U.S. military hospital in Europe to the highly regarded National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, for treatment at its brain injury center.

I'm impressed (and surprised) Woodruff and Vogt are being transferred to a military hospital.

Like many others, I'm here to peck at this keyboard because of the high quality of military medicine.

I wish them the best and hope for their recovery.

But, what I would also like to see is a follow on comparison and contrast when, God willing, they begin their physical rehabilitation therapy. How will it measure up to the Rehab our G.I.s receive?

I surmise Code Pink will stop their across the street protest once these elitist GI Joe dolls are admitted.

Were any soldiers or marines injured in this incident?

I don't think so.. they were with Iraqi forces. I know Iraqi troops were injured or killed in the incident.

Guys,

The leftists over at DailyKOS are blowing FReepers away with details on this. There are two American soldiers over there signed on who are saying the following (the alleged soldiers are not saying anything treasonous but one apparently says he got kicked off of Redstate):

1) This happened with an IA unit comprised of Sunnis from Diyala as well as Shiites and Kurds.

2) The soldiers are saying that the concept of including Sunnis in the IA is wildly stupid.

3) Woodruff was most likely targeted with help of some Sunni members of the unit he was with.

4) Apparently...and I find this hard to believe...Woodruff was provided with a very unusual vehicle (an M113 or a BMP?). One that could be spotted a mile away as a target. The IA is targeted a lot more than the US Army.

It is to bad that our wounded troops do not get as much press as these two have. Of course they would cast wounded soldiers in a negative light.

I have to say that I have been reading nonsense about Sunnis being included in Iraqi military units and police...but I have been at a loss for words to think that it might be true that Sunnis ARE allowed in the IA and police.

The American "soldier" over at KOS is saying that Woodruff should have made sure he went with a unit that didn't include any Sunnis either with the unit or in dispatch.

I completely agree.

What I don't like are the accusations that our military guys told Woodruff that he'd be safe when they themselves would prefer to go only with a unit that had no Sunnis in it.

Just because they are saying it on Kos makes it all suspect.
Most commentators on Kos are notorious liars.

Why should we care about these two from ABC?

Has ABC given our guys in the Military an honest days reporting? I think not.

I loved the way Rush Limbaugh tore into the media yesterday by turning the tables on them about this, he was like a tiger!

BTW, when the attack happened they were rolling tape.
Yesterday on WLS, Chicago, they interviewed a reporter from ABC. She became all defensive when questioned about whether or not they would show the tape. Said they are being sensitive to the families.
You can bet if it wasn't a member of the ABC family they would have had that on the air by now.

Note that I did not differentiate in my question on the basis of nationality. ABC has been all over this story, which I accept because it's one of their own. But I don't recall hearing if any soldiers were injured, whether they are U.S., Coalition, or Iraqi.

I thought one had a very minor injury. But I do not remember its nature.

Maybe so but this rings pretty true to me. The Iraqi's have old Soviet BMP's. I would think they would be safer than the Humvee's because they are, in fact, armored vehicles. Standing up in the hatch kind of negates the armor.

I also believe what they are saying about the Sunnis. Insider information is also being credited with the losses experienced by that Marine Reserve unit from Detroit that lost an entire sniper team plus 14 others in an IED attack.

This was a big problem in Vietnam also where U.S. units were expected to inform and coordinate with our Vietnamese allies who were thoroughly penetrated by the enemy.

The first important thing is operational security. Even if it means locking down your friends after mission orders have been discussed.

Please...they were with an IRAQI Army unit. The soldier wounded was an Iraqi.

And probably not a Sunni by the way.

The alleged US soldier at KOS does have a point when he brings up the subject: why would we have created an Iraqi Army that has Sunnis in it? He is saying that this is plain stupid. I have to wonder myself...could we really have been stupid enough to put Sunni infiltrators into the IA? I would like to see what Woodruff has to say about this later when he recovers. I would hope that he goes after the real story...no longer serving the left wing while certainly not involved in painting any rosy pictures either...was he setup by a Sunni in the IA unit he was with?
