Tax increases and job cuts urged for N.J. (more taxes - of course!)
The Star-Ledger (New Jersey) ^ | 1/27/06 | Jeff Whelan and Dunstan McNichol

Saying "pain will have to be shared," Gov. Jon Corzine's transition team is urging him to increase taxes, lay off some state workers and cut the pay of others to help get state finances under control.

The proposals -- including higher gasoline taxes, sales taxes on clothing and Internet downloads and a phase-out of the state worker pension system -- were met with a lukewarm response by Democratic legislative leaders and howls of protest from Republicans.

OF COURSE -- NEW TAXES! Why didn't we New Jerseyans think of that before?

Politicians need to start running government not like a business, but like a FAMILY would. When a family goes short on cash or hits hard times, can they just invent new money? No. They have to scrimp, save, eliminate all unnecessary expenses, and cut budgets to the bone. How refreshing it would be to find one politician somewhere in this country with the wisdom to see that, and the stones to carry it out.

Geez, don't get the vapors. It's only a proposal for a temporary tax surcharge. It'll go away once it's served it's purpose, just like many other taxes have in the past, for example...

uh,

never mind.

"pain will have to be shared,"

Of course Brave Sir Corzine kept that little inanity under his hat until after the dopes elected him.

Somehow I think Mr. Three Hundred Million Dollars is going feel very little of that pain he proscribes for the rest of us.

a phase-out of the state worker pension system

Nothing wrong with this idea except, considering this is government we're talking about, it's at least 20 years ahead of its time.

they will never touch the state pension system. McGreevey hired thousands of new workers during his term.

let Corzine run amuck - gas taxes, taxes on clothing - the more he does, the better chance Kean Jr has at knocking Menendez off.

I'm here, too, up in heavily Republcian Morris County. Keep the faith, folks.

I once was cited for the FreeRepublic "Quote of the Day" (do we still have that?) for the following observation:

"The Star-Ledger is so far to the left that I have to retrieve my copy from my neighbor's driveway each morning."

I agree.... there's only one problem. Because the idea makes sense, because this is New Jersey, and because it was proposed by a Dem governor in a union-heavy state, it will never see the light of day.   (>>sigh<<)

"I didn't vote for him!"

Neither did I. But my in-laws did believing he was going to reduce their propoerty taxes by 30%. Uh-huh. Silly liberals. Now I have to think about how I am going to move out of this state.

Either that or find a way to beat Menendez to send a message.

I didn't know he said he was going to lower property taxes.

Forrester said he would.

I knew his first order of business would be to raise taxes.

He has always been a tax and spend liberal and he always will be!
