Steelers Safety a Menace on Field (Polamalu Alert)
Orange County Register ^ | 1/20/06 | Michael Levy

Posted on 01/20/2006 10:31:23 AM PST by beyond the sea

Reporters and cameramen surround Troy Polamalu in the visitors' locker room at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. You lean in to try to hear what the Pittsburgh Steelers safety has to say, but it's fruitless. Polamalu barely speaks above a whisper. And you think: This is the guy who terrorized Peyton Manning?

Another anecdote, from a few years back: Polamalu asks USC teammate Alex Holmes for permission to take out his sister, Theodora. Holmes wouldn't let anyone else on the team talk to Theodora, let alone date her. But he tells Polamalu, ``Of course. Nothing could make me happier.''

Holmes accedes because Polamalu ``is such an exceptional person.'' You hear this and think: This is the guy who gives offensive coordinators nightmares?

Polamalu is indeed that guy. Soft-spoken off the field, teeth-rattling hitter on it. Mild-mannered, generous person, maniacal, intimidating player.

In many ways, Polamalu embodies the defense for which he toils: The first-glance perception and the reality are separate entities. The Denver Broncos must contend with both in the AFC championship game Sunday. It's no easy task.

Polamalu's bedevilment of the Colts included seven tackles, two pass breakups and three near-interceptions. The previous week, in a victory over Cincinnati, he had six tackles, a half-sack and an interception no replay review could reverse.

``That's becoming normal for him, to be pretty much the most dominant player on the field,'' said Holmes, who not only became Polamalu's brother-in-law but also plays tight end for the Miami Dolphins. ``That's a crazy thing to say in the NFL.''

Yes, he's got it all. He's going to be known as one of the 10 best players in the league real soon, imo.

I guess Troy does not need to be big. With him on the field for the Steelers, size doesn't matter.

For the same reason bullets don't need to be big. Force is mass times acceleration, and Troy can bring a hell of a lot of acceleration. Troy shall apply an impulse against Anderson which knocks Anderson's skeleton out of his body.

Is this the safety that apparently prays a lot - they had something on TV (had it on in the background) and were talking about a safety that's really religious and prays a lot - if this is the guy, I'm going to assume that he probably causes quite a few people to say a prayer here and there.

and my normally 250 to 275 yd drives (I'm 51) were about 190 - 200 at Bayou Oaks and caused me to hit 150 yd 5 irons at the greens..in NO before the hurricanes of course...it makes a difference

He's also one of the most recognizable, with that long mane of hair.

as a Browns fan I respect the Steeler org a LOT
the Denver owner Bowlen(?) is a loser, just like lil Jimmy Irsay here in Colts Country
He's the guy that told all the Denver fans where the Browns were staying in town and to go over there and raise hell all night to keep them from sleeping

GO STEELERS

Brief reminder, Broncos are 13-3 not 9-7... if it wasn't for...(blah, blah, blah) the Broncos would be 15-1...

The Colts were 15-1. The Bengals weren't 9-7 either.

REMINDER, the other times the Broncos lost at home in the playoffs, they were 13-3.

Woulda, shoulda, coulda... Steelers 23 - Broncos 16

"I am definately rooting for the Steelers..."

Being a long-time Cleveland fan, I would not ordinarily say it - but I am rooting for the Steelers too!

I just hope that the Steelers fans will be generous and loan their Terrible Towels to the Broncos fans to dry their eyes.

Gotta say, I am too. Not historically a fan of Pittsburgh. I think Cowher is a tremendous coach. Love watching Polamalu, and I would love to see Bettis with a ring, or at least a super bowl appearance in his final year.

They have been interviewing pulmonary docs on TV in Pittsburgh all week and they said aside from the need to keep well hydrated, the altitude will not make any difference to well conditioned football players who exert energy in short bursts as opposed to endurance athletes. I'd imagine basketball players probably have a tougher time than football players in Denver.

I would be very curious to see the Broncos' lifetime home vs. away record and how that stacks up against other teams in terms of percentage of wins at home vs. road.
