Renowned scientist James Lovelock says he believes the world has passed the point of no return for climate change, and civilization is unlikely to survive.
Thirty years ago Lovelock conceived the idea that Earth possesses a planetary-scale control system he named Gaia, which keeps our environment fit for life, The Independent reported Monday. But now he believes mankind's abuse of the environment has made climate change insoluble and life on Earth will never be the same again.
In an extraordinarily pessimistic new assessment published in Monday's Independent, Lovelock suggests efforts to counter global warming cannot succeed, and that, in effect, it is already too late.
Lovelock now believes Earth and human society face nearly complete disaster, and sooner than nearly anybody realizes.
He writes, "Before this century is over, billions of us wil! l die, and the few breeding pairs of people that survive will be in the Arctic, where the climate remains tolerable."
Faith-based science is no science at all.
Wow, he figures that? I guess that makes him pretty important, huh?
What are these chicken littles going to do when they find out the sun will turn into eventually turn into a red giant and swell up to the size of Mars' orbit and the earth will be vaporized?
Great! Since we cannot succeed, and we're all doomed, will they now just SHUT UP ?

This guy is a loon. If the world is going to destroy itself because of global warming then I see no reason why we cannot drill in ANWR or create more nuke plants so we can have cheaper energy in our last days.

I read an article that says at that time, while Earth will be fried, the moons of Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune will be at Earthlike temperatures. Would be interesting to see if we are still around then what we'd do with those worlds.
Oh NO! it's happening now...here in the UK I can see the vapor...it will hit US mainland in about ten minutes.... aaaaaagghhhh...
I posted this comment earlier on another post relating to the spike in crude prices over Iran, but fits here as well.
Think this is junk science? Do the research yourself and you'll see that things are definately pointing that way.
Now lets couple this current scare on Iranian futures with the FACT that right now the water temperature in the Gulf of Mexico is running 9-10 degrees warmer than the normal average for the month of January.
I live in near Destin and as much as I like the MUCH warmer than average temps, it does have consequences. We already have a significant start to a warmer Gulf for the year which we all know the warmer water, the higher the octane to fuel hurricanes.
An extremely large portion of the gulf is still in the 80's.
The purpose of hurricanes is to cool ocean temps and disipate that heat throughout the world. I'm already dreading the 2006 hurricane season.
Crude oil prices being driven up by Iran and Hurricanes could easily cause gas to go well over $5 a gallon.

I've seen Lovelock ---he looks an awful lot like Al Gore with unconvincing old-man makeup----funny how you never see the two of them together at the same time......just a thought..
I rather doubt that the earth will be vaporized when that happens. For one, we should have the capability to move planets - at least very slowly - before the millennium is out. So, as long as human civilization is still around the earth should survive. More significantly, it's now thought that the gravitational fluctuations of the sun as it approaches red giant stage will move the earth further out in any event, far enough out that it won't get vaporized.
