Kuwait's Emir Sheikh Jaber dies
BBC News ^ | January 15, 2006

Posted on 01/14/2006 8:35:43 PM PST by jmc1969

The emir of oil-rich Kuwait, Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmad al-Sabah, has died aged 77, a court statement has said. Sheikh Jaber, who had led the country since December 1977, suffered ill health and was seldom seen in public after suffering a minor stroke in 2001.

The statement announcing his death was read on Kuwaiti state television.

Concerns have grown in recent years for the Gulf state's future leadership, with the country's crown prince also in his 70s and said to be in poor health.

A 40-day period of mourning has been declared and government offices will be closed for three days.

I'm all broken up. Should we be preparing to ululate or just order in a couple racks of ribs?

The Prince of Kuwait is very very old, sick, and weak. I suspect there could be a big fight for control of Kuwait.

Those emirs always seem to get strokes and rule for years in an incapacitated state. So who can tell the difference?

Jaber?

He was one of the all time greats in the NBA and in college at UCLA.

Rest in peace, Kareem.

Condolences to the family.

To those of you who wish to make fun of the leader of a country grateful for our liberation of them, have at it.

I just got back from eating barbeque, and I'm too stuffed to ululate.

I didn't know the Emir. But the folks who keep rejoicing on this thread must also rejoice when al-Qaida blows up an Iraqi police academy.

Yippee! More arabs dead!

It's threads like these where people reveal their true nature and grasp of reality.

"ululate", describes (principally) the wail of grieving Arab women; here are a couple of definitions:

http://www.dictionary.com/wordoftheday/archive/2000/08/04.html
ululate \UL-yuh-layt; YOOL-\, intransitive verb:
To howl, as a dog or a wolf; to wail; as, ululating jackals.

He had often dreamed of his grieving family visiting his grave, ululating as only the relatives of martyrs may.
--Edward Shirley, Know Thine Enemy: A Spy's Journey into Revolutionary Iran

She wanted to be on the tarmac, to ululate and raise her hands to the heavens.
--Deborah Sontag, "Palestinian Airport Opens to Jubilation," New York Times, November 25, 1998
