Andy Rooney: Schieffer 'Embarrassing' CBS News

CBS’s ‘60 Minutes’ curmudgeon Andy Rooney says Bob Schieffer is "embarrassing the hell out of CBS.”

In a televised appearance with CNN’s Larry King, Rooney said Schieffer should keep the job he was assigned on an interim basis after the departure of former ‘CBS Evening News’ anchor Dan Rather.

CBS has been in hot pursuit of NBC ‘Today Show’ co-host Katie Couric as a possible "news celebrity” replacement for Schieffer on the Evening News program. The Tiffany network has reportedly offered Couric $20 million to leave NBC and take the job.

Rooney suggested CBS take that money and plow it into newsgathering resources that would improve the quality of the network’s news coverage.

"[Schieffer’s] ratings keep going up,” Rooney said, "and they keep talking about replacing him with somebody. I mean, you know, they’re talking about giving Katie Couric $20 million. I say take that $20 million [and] you could buy 40 reporters …

"So take that $20 million, don’t give it to Katie. Give it to a bunch of reporters and make CBS news the best news report in the world.”

Schieffer’s "embarrassment” for the network comes with his apparent humility, viewer appeal and perceived apathy toward the supposed high status accorded to the Evening News anchor position. Rooney told King he would recommend that CBS "keep Schieffer,” but that his friend "doesn’t really give a damn. That’s the thing. He likes his job in Washington.”

Yes. Andy Rooney's infamous 60 Minutes rant on the peanut content in a jar of mixed nuts is more than just a rant on the Planters corporation - it's a metaphor for all of CBS.

Never did like Rooney. Arrogance and senility are a deadly mix.

Andy just doesn't get it. It's not WHO reports, it's WHAT they report and HOW they report it that has gotten them to where they are today.

On the other hand, given the kind of reporters CBS is likely to hire, we might all be better off with Katie Couric. After all, there's only one of her. Forty reporters would probably be forty times as noxious.

Schieffer is a DNC toadie and never missed a chance to demonstrate his loyalty.

Andy, you had an extremely well-paid, ostensibly intelligent and ostensibly experienced anchor-producer news team who either (a) couldn't recognize blatant forgeries when they saw them, or (b) recognized them for what they were and ran a story based on them anyway. How exactly would more money solve that?

Gee, CBS reporters are more overpaid than TV weathermen, though the weathermen are right about as often.

I don't understand. Isn't Andy asking that the money be spent on better reporting?

"I say take that $20 million [and] you could buy 40 reporters"

$500,000 per reporter? You've got to be kidding! More like 400 reporters at $50,000 would be more reasonable.

Andy apparently misspoke the truth... Reporters are something CBS buys like cameras or studio sets... Except reporters cost a half million each... Just think 20 million would only buy 40 reporters. Note Andy does not say hire, employ,or fund .. he says buy reporters.

Now we know that CBS buys reporters.

They need to make more reporters so the price would come way down.. Wouldn't it be nice if everybody could own at least one...

Ah, Andy's just jealous. As long as Katie stays at NBC, Andy remains, arguably, the most despicable a**wipe on CBS.

CBS would be better served if they developed a real 24 hour Cable News Network and used that source for their evening news reports rather than putting perky Couric to put everyone off their evening meal.

Their entertainment section is putting on hits - whereas their "news" department has become irrelevant in comparison.

Either they get into the "big league" news business or give it up.

They could always rerun Leave it to Beaver over and over because nobody would care - nobody watches them.
