MECCA, Saudi Arabia — Muslim pilgrims stampeded on the last day of a symbolic stoning ritual at the hajj on Thursday, and the Interior Ministry said an unknown number of people were killed. The Al-Arabiya network reported that dozens of pilgrims died.
The stampede occurred as tens of thousands of pilgrims filed past al-Jamarat, a series of three pillars representing the devil that the faithful pelt with stones to purge themselves of sin.
The ritual has seen deadly stampedes in the past, including one in 1990 that killed 1,426 people and another in February 2004 that killed 244.

From what I've read, that is the case. Anyone who dies while on the Hajj gets an immediate free pass to heaven. Not sure if they get the virgins, though.

Wow, Senator Kennedy, that's quite a leap in logic there. If Hispanics were blowing up school buses, shopping malls, hospitals, and promulgating a religion whose principal command to its followers was convert-or-kill then I'd agree with that. But they aren't. When the muslims renounce killing or converting EVERYONE ELSE then I may be inclined to change my mind about them, but until then I will not shed a tear for the deaths of people who would kill me or mine with nary a thought.
