FReepers, I need some help. My husband is stationed in Iraq and he's sent me an email of all the things soldiers are moaning for.
Is there any way we can get together go great care package for the 1st Sgt (my hubby) to hand out? Any suggestions as to how I am supposed ot go about doing this? (Take it easy on me. I just got out of the hospital yesterday!)
Here's the list:
Jerky
Sunflower seeds
All types of tobacco (cigars, chew, cigarettes)
Magazines (fitness, guns, cars, cosmo, guy stuff. I need one or two people to take care of the girls... Cosmo, etc.)
DVD players with all the required plugs, cables, etc.
Books
Sheet Sets (NICE, new ones! They're grateful for what they have, but sleeping on faded, worn, sailboats and flowers is not making them happy) Bottom sheets, especially. They're tucking top sheets into their bunks.
Homemade stuff (cookies, popcorn balls, candies, etc.)
Now for the really big one... comforters and quits. Are there any ladies out there who would be willing to donate?
They do NOT need junk food or candy (poggie bait). The mess hall is wonderful. They just need some homemade goodies from a loving "mom".
Overall, they are well taken care of, but what I hear most is that they miss home. (and tobacco!) They need some munchies and some comfort.
OK, People. Two hundred Fort Hood, D Company, Special Troops Battalion, 4th Infantry Division DRAKES are sending up smoke signals. How do we respond?
Great link!! I'll pass the info on to my husband right away.
Thanks Marie.
I'm not affiliated with the group, but I did pick up that link on FR awhile back.
I know it sounds weird, but I have to avoid the deployment threads. The first time he left, I was glued to the news, but it really destroyed me. As I've gotten older, I've learned that it's best for me to not think about what he's *really* doing on a day-to-day basis. It's easier if I just pretend that he's gone to the field for a few months.
Sadly, I end up uninformed. If anyone finds moer things like this, please let me know!
You're welcome Marie.
Oh no! Sorry, Cindy, but that is NOT a good place to look for support. Believe me! I know, and so do some other FReepers. The founder of BFS is a liberal and friend of Michael Moore's. In fact, BFS has distributed thousands of MM books and DVDs to troops. The site moderators are liberals. The site operates under the guise of being apolitical. It would be a terrible mistake to give the name and addy of this unit to BFS.
Unfortunately, not everyone on FR is apprised of this. I have personal experience of this site from the days when patriotic posters had anything critical of MM removed.
These are my views and do not represent in any way the views of FR management.
No kidding?
I'm so sorry La Enchiladita.
I'll pull my suggestion.
Thanks for the head's up!
Hey, it was a sweet idea! Maybe hubby could have the soldiers post at a Delta Company Drake wish list at Amazon.
Marie, here is a tip from a soldier:
"If you're sending stuff that needs power, MAKE SURE it works on 220-240 volt current! The good ol' US of A 110-volt stuff will burst into flames if we plug it in without adapters or power converters.
Along with tobacco, another thing that's needed is LIGHTERS. They tend to run in short supply in theater.
We have massive amounts of paperbacks here, but I need to second the motion of magazines, especially mags with a specialty, like hunting/fishing, sports, fitness, etc.
And as I've stated other places, back off the junk food."
I'm really sorry.
I wish everyone here knew, so they would delete that link.
Sadly, people are still being fooled.
Thanks for the note on the 220 issue. Hubby didn't mention that issue. Are you at Lib?
I'm here in the states.
I'm a housewife.
Sorry, didn't get that. Is *he* at Lib?
Ther reason I ask is that some of the US posts are partially converted to 110. I know that the first time I lived in Germany everything was 220. The newer places all had 110 so converters weren't an issue. I emailed my husband to see which he needed.
The tip from a soldier is from one who is active duty and not in the states at this time.
Despite the traitorous media I find most of my fellow citizens totally suporting our people overseas...even if they disagree with why they're there. The people know that this is a weird religious war against fanatical Islam and every new bombing reinforces their belief that these lunatics need to be eradicated for these countries to have any hope of representative government. Perhaps we should declare it outright, alienating Saudi Arabia and regaining the respect and support of the civilized world.
Packets of sugar-free koolaid. My husband loved them because they give them liter sized bottles of water and the the sugar-free packets were the perfect size to flavor the water without much bulk, so they could carry a lot of them. I used to put a couple in every letter I mailed him.
