With O’Reilly as Guest, Very Serious Letterman Denounces Iraq War & Hails Sheehan
NewsBusters ^ | January 3, 2006 | Brent Baker

Displaying a hostility to President Bush and the Iraq war similar to that expressed by Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart, on tonight’s Late Show David Letterman will go further than I’ve ever heard him in revealing his derision for President Bush’s decision to launch the Iraq war. I know this thanks to the “Big Show Highlight," a two-minute streaming-only RealPlayer preview of tonight’s program, which is now featured on the Late Show’s home page.

In the posted clip, Letterman mockingly tells guest Bill O’Reilly: "The President himself, less than a month ago said we are there because of a mistake made in intelligence. Well, whose intelligence? It was just somebody just get off a bus and handed it to him?" Letterman demands: “Why the Hell are we there to begin with?" When O’Reilly points out that the British, Russians and Egyptians also presumed Iraq had WMD, Letterman retorts: “Well then that makes it all right?" Turning unusually serious, Letterman soon lectures: “I'm very concerned about people like yourself who don't have nothing but endless sympathy for a woman like Cindy Sheehan. Honest to Christ. Honest to Christ." That prompts O’Reilly to contend: “No way a terrorist who blows up women and children is going to be called a ‘freedom fighter' on my program." To which Letterman fires back: “I have the feeling about 60 percent of what you say is crap.” After the show airs in an hour, I will update this item with more from the Letterman/O’Reilly exchange, including a video clip. (Transcript of RealPlayer excerpt follows.)

It took me a while, but I managed to take down this transcript from the two-minute streaming RealPlayer “Big Show Highlight” video clip on the Late Show home page:

David Letterman: “The President himself, less than a month ago said we are there because of a mistake made in intelligence. Well, whose intelligence? It was just somebody just get off a bus and handed it to him?”

Bill O’Reilly: “No.”

Letterman: “No, it was the intelligence gathered by his administration.”

O’Reilly: “By the CIA.”

Letterman: “Yeah, so why are we there in the first place? I agree to you, with you that we have to support the troops. They are there, they are the best and the brightest of this country. [audience applause] There’s no doubt about that. And I also agree that now we’re in it it’s going to take a long, long time. People who expect it’s going to be solved and wrapped up in a couple of years, unrealistic, it’s not going to happen. However, however, that does not eliminate the legitimate speculation and concern and questioning of ‘Why the Hell are we there to begin with?’”

O’Reilly: “If you want to question that, and then re-vamp an intelligence agency that’s obviously flawed, the CIA, okay. But remember, MI-6 in Britain said the same thing. Putin’s people in Russia said the same thing, and so did Mubarak’s intelligence agency in Egypt.”

Letterman: “Well then that makes it all right?”

O’Reilly: “No it doesn’t make it right.”

Letterman: “That intelligence agencies across the board makes it alright that we’re there?”

O’Reilly: “It doesn’t make it right.”

Letterman: “See, I’m very concerned about people like yourself who don’t have nothing but endless sympathy for a woman like Cindy Sheehan. Honest to Christ.” [audience applause]

O’Reilly: “No, I’m sorry.”

Letterman: “Honest to Christ.”

“O’Reilly: “No way. [waits for applause to die down] No way you’re going to get me, no way that a terrorist who blows up women and children.”

Letterman: “Do you have children?”

O’Reilly: “Yes I do. I have a son the same age as yours. No way a terrorist who blows up women and children is going to be called a ‘freedom fighter’ on my program.” [mild audience applause]

Letterman: “I’m not smart enough to debate you point to point on this, but I have the feeling, I have the feeling about 60 percent of what you say is crap. [audience laughter] But I don’t know that for a fact. [more audience applause]

Thanks for the link. I just sent them this:

Letterman's performance tonight with Bill O'Reilly was a disgrace. What an ignorant horse's ass Dave has become. Once upon a time he was witty; now he has degenerated into a sour, bitter, fool and a detriment to your fine network. I will never watch him again.

Letterman soon lectures: “I'm very concerned about people like yourself who don't have nothing but endless sympathy for a woman like Cindy Sheehan. Honest to Christ. Honest to Christ."

Yea, right...endless sympathy for a woman that has used her own sons death in battle for his country to defame the very country he sacrificed all for. Endless sympathy of a nit-wit
mouthpiece for the virulent Left that would have America lose this War on Terror ,
and face shame and dishonor and leave the world at the mercy of the bloodthirsty radical islamists. Endless sympathy for this woman that travels the country and the world spouting sedition and trying to inspire hatred and lack of respect for both our Leadership and the Armed Forces. Endless sympathy for this woman that put together a fake Mothers of Vets organization and then uses the names of the deceased soldiers , without permission of the rightful relatives and even expressly against their wishes.
If Letterman can have sympathy for Sheehan after what she has done he needs to seriously reevaluate what should inspire sympathy and what kills it....

"Letterman Denounces Iraq War & Hails Sheehan"

He can't get anyone to laugh so he may as well be controversial and keep his name in the marquis.

Thanks for this transcript. Here's another thread discussing O'Reilly's appearance on Letterman tonight (no transcript posted there though). Bill O'Reilly on Letterman tonight (Jan 3, 2006)

I'm not always a huge O'Reilly fan, but BRAVO to Bill for annihilating the clueless and idiotic fool David Letterman tonight!

Many years ago Letterman had G. Gordon Liddy on as a guest. This wasn't long after Liddy's autobiography Will was published. Letterman did his best to make Liddy look like an idiot and at one point laughed at Liddy over the story about Liddy biting the head off a rat. Liddy responded (paraphrasing): "Well, Dave, that was a method that I used to overcome my fear of rats. And today I am no more afraid of rats (pause)... than I am of you."

You probably had to see it to understand what a slap in the face it was, but it was classic.

Yes, Leno's a lib, but it's interesting to remember that his wife Mavis has for years been an activist for the women of Afghanistan, since long before our recent involvement there.

I wonder how that all worked out in the Leno household, after the fall of the Taliban. Is Mavis a supporter of the current admin? Or does she join her husband in his apparent opinion of GWB?

I'm so glad you brought this up... I've been wondering about this myself. Funny how we haven't heard a PEEP from Mavis since the fall of the Taliban in Afghanistan...

Transcript of Bill O'Reilly's appearance on the 1/3/06 Late Show with David Letterman posted here. Bill started out a bit shaky, but ended up annihilating Letterman IMHO.

Please FReepmail me if you want on or off my FoxFan list. *Warning: This can be a high-volume ping list at times.

And that's the problem. A talk show host that makes his living in talking small talk entertainment. Yet he insist on dissing our military by badmouthing our President.

Letterman hates Conservatives. He has fathered a "bastard" and will not marry the mother. Most of all he supports the Homosexual agenda and sees it losing the cultural battle under Bush and the Republicans. He and his friends are furious over this development.

I must suck being on the left coast and having much of what goes on in the news based on est?
It just seams that anything that happens live would be out of whack as far a timing for work schedules etc.

>>>Talk show hosts who haven't clue one as to how intelligence is gathered shouldn't be discussing it.<<<

What all these kneejerk Bush haters seem more than willing to overlook is the fact that the intelligence on Iraq exposing thier WMD's was collected over a number of years...spanning the last four of the Clinton administration as well as the first two of W's.

and the small fact that every Democrat in a position of importance had statded that Saddam had to be dealt with because of his WMD's

"David Letterman is a loser. Jay Leno continues to cream him in the ratings. He should crawl into his hole with his cabana piano man and they can enjoy eachothers company'

Ah, the old "anyone's opinion I don't agree with is gay" retort. Color me enlightened.
