Democrat calls for SBA chief to resign over Katrina loans
Nashville Business Journal /MSNBC ^ | Jan. 1, 2006

The top Democrat on the House Small Business Committee called for the immediate resignation of Small Business Administration chief Hector Barreto.

The agency's slow handling of hurricane disaster loans was the last straw for Rep. Nydia Velazquez, D-N.Y. She also contends the SBA has failed to ensure that small businesses have adequate access to capital and government contracting opportunities.

"We need new leadership at SBA with the vision to put this agency back on track," Velazquez says.

Barreto says he has no plans to leave.

"There's so much work left to be done," he says.

The chairman of the House Small Business Committee says Velazquez was "just dead wrong" to ask for Barreto's resignation.

"I can tell you right now he's not going to quit," says Rep. Don Manzullo, R-Ill.

Manzullo held a press conference to defend the SBA administrator, who was called "the next Michael Brown" in a Washington Post editorial that compared Barreto's alleged lack of urgency in the wake of Hurricane Katrina to that of the former Federal Emergency Management Agency director.

Democrats are quit-callers unless they screw up...and then they are tenacious.

I've been calling for Nydia Velazquez, D-N.Y. to resign for years. She's been stinking up the House for way too long.

"The agency's slow handling of hurricane disaster loans was the last straw for Rep. Nydia Velazquez, D-N.Y."

Pathetic. 'rats are anti-business anyway. So she's outraged for the sake of being outraged?

Did she offer anything on this? Of course not, Nagin and Blanco are heroes to her.

These people become more laughable and out of control by the day. I wonder if this idiot would be as fervent in her call for Hector Barreto to resign if he was a liberal?

Barreto's unforgiveable sin is failure to be a Democrat.

So is Bush's.

Policies & performance? Good of the Country?

Who cares. Dem's politics of personal destruction is all.

This twat Nydia Velazquez can't hold a candle to the accomplishments of Mr. Barreto.

To Nydia Velazquez this man represents everything she failed to be, everything she could never accomplish on her own, and everything that is wrong with the American enterprise system.

These very things are what make America work, make this country run, keeps people employed, and offers Hispanics and other immigrants who want to work an honest living(the bane of Velazquez's political existence) a way to find capital in low doc low interest loans.

It was the damn Democrats in the Senate after Jeffords jumped who forced the gutting of the SBA in the compromise omnibus bill anyway.

Rep. Velazquez Unites with Lenders In SBA Issue

December 21, 2001

By Nicole Duran, Thomson Financial
excerpt:

When it comes to the SBA and the administration, the fifth-term congresswoman from Brooklyn does have some praise for President Bush's decisions, however.

She strongly backed his choice to head the agency, Hector V. Barreto Jr.

When the President's first move was to cut the 7a program's funding, which helps minorities and women, Rep. Velazquez feared the agency would lose ground in helping those groups.

"It was the worst budget I've ever seen in my years on the committee," she said.

But she believes Mr. Barreto is committed to helping minority and women entrepreneurs.

"He may be alone in his beliefs in the administration, but it is too soon to tell," she said.
