BEIJING - Chinese police have closed 598 Web sites in a crackdown on pornography, but online gambling and fraud are growing, state media said Friday.
The latest crackdown, launched in March, led to 25 arrests, the China Daily Newspaper said, citing figures from the Ministry of Public Security. That figure was low compared with more than 500 people arrested in a nationwide crackdown last year.
China has the world's second-largest population of Internet users after the United States, with more than 100 million people online.
The communist government encourages Internet use for education and business but has launched repeated campaigns to stamp out material deemed obscene or subversive.
In the heaviest reported sentence for online obscenity, a 20-year-old Web site operator in eastern China was jailed in 2004 for 15 years for selling downloads of sexually oriented movies.
By "pornography" does the Chinese government mean displaying images of a crude replica of the Statue of Liberty as happened in Beijing in 1989?
I'm actually surprised they care about porn. Is somebody not paying the right "fees" to the right people?
The U.S. economy would die if they implemented that law. Ban all Pornography immediately now. LOL.
Nah, it wouldn't die. And a lot of people might get over their addictions to perversion and be happier for it. On the other hand, let 'em live in their sqauller if they so choose.
You row your own boat to hell, if porn is your oar of choice, it's your trip, might as well make it worth the ride.
My thoughts exactly. Meanwhile 599 sites just sprung up to replace them. Ha-Ha.
Well it might not be my cup of tea, but I don't want the government getting involved in it. I did not know you were communist. Sorry to hear that.
Havoc has shown no communistic tendacies, but explored the possibilities of the consequences of a porn ban or freedom. Havoc may not be a communist but you certainly prove to be judgemental.
A communist? Doesn't appear you had two brain cells to rub together when you read my post, that or you didn't read it.
Pornography is a plague on our society,
I agree. A vast amount of sexual crimes are due to porn and sexual crimes against children are fueled by child pornography traded on the internet. There is absolutely nothing good about porn.
I think in this area I am more libertarian. I do understand and agree with your statements to a point. Why is it wrong for a person over 18 to look at what he/she wants to (as long as legal)? But I am REALLY surprised that you are so concerned about what other societies think of us...you are the only conservative that does. We conservatives would barf if France suddenly respected us.
I was chatting with a friend that moved to and now lives in Shanghi and was cut off from chatting with him. He was home for the Holidays and told me I was banned from chatting with him!!! Gotta love it
