'now considers the wolf as a federal dog,'
There's a joke there somewhere.
On its front page Tuesday, the Los Angeles Times wrote about continuing resistance to wolves in the greater Yellowstone area. Staff writer Julie Cart quoted from Jones' tongue-in-cheek release titled "Wyoming Governor tells feds to go to Hell."
"In Wyoming, for example, Gov. Dave Freudenthal last April decreed that the (Endangered Species Act) is no longer in force and that the state 'now considers the wolf as a federal dog' unworthy of protection," Cart wrote.
Jones' e-mail included other made-up quotes from Freudenthal in reaction to the federal courts dismissing Wyoming's lawsuit against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service over the state's wolf management plan.
Jones said he sent the e-mail to friends as a joke and has no idea how it ended up becoming "fact."
"Apparently, (the news release) made the e-mail rounds ... but it was (certainly) not generated by this office," Azar stressed.
"We had another paper that ran the whole thing almost (verbatim) ... and we finally got that paper to retract it," Azar said. "We've contacted this reporter and asked them to correct the mistake."
Los Angeles Times deputy metro editor David Lauter called the error unfortunate. "We hate when this kind of thing happens...

Many Freepers could do this well, because we all know them SO well:)
"In Wyoming, for example, Gov. Dave Freudenthal last April decreed that the Endangered Species Act is no longer in force and that the state 'now considers the wolf as a federal dog,' unworthy of protection," the story read
The Times printed a correction Wednesday, acknowledging that the news release was a hoax.
"The reporter saw it on the Internet and had talked with the governor in the past, so she was familiar enough with the way he talks and writes that she thought it sounded authentic, and she didn't check, which she should have," Times Deputy Metro Editor David Lauter told the Casper Star Tribune.
"We hate when this kind of thing happens, and we correct it as quickly as we can," Lauter said.
Yet another example of the numerous levels of fact checkers and editors that the bloggers just dont have.

Isn't that why they're putting collars on as many as they can?
That's the problem with the internet as a news source. No quality control.
It's perfectly legal to lie to and mislead reporters. Phony foundations are legal too, provided one does not use the front to obtain anything of value (i.e., don't commit legal fraud).
I did some digging to figure out if the phony TANG story broke any law, and the only legal remedy I came up with was a civil cause of action in favor of President Bush for defamation. If the press can lie to the public wih only the risk of defamation suits, then certainly turnabout is fair play.
In a perfect world the reporter would be fired and her editor, too. Instead the reporter will be cycled through the obituary and the "Here's what's going on at Westover Junior High" sections and the editor will be congratulated for perpetrating the "fake but accurate" approach to demonizing all the MSM's enemies.
The Left does this all the time. Every time there is a new headline event, "institutes" and "centers for the study of ____" spring up like mushrooms after a rain, flooding the media with faxes. The nosepickers in the media score an easy quote from a sympathetic "expert" without having to get off the couch, and life goes on...
Nice
I did a webpage (also posted it here on FR threads) of ClownCar.gifs left & right ("flipped" right at GIFworks) with an animated "Hiway" to a animated "City" in the center
Hillary at center top
Highway & City I got from an old WebTV intro .gif they once ued as you "connected"
Pretty good graphic FX - I enlarged and "split" them in 2
"ClownCar.gif"
Is also dandy for illegal alien threads
"Tijuana Taxi"
&/or
"The Big Yellow Taxi"
as BG music
Ha,ha. That's funny. There's no business like newspaper business like no business I know.
:) Thanks for the ping, devolve.
LOL. OTOH, somebody should have said it if the governor didn't. I mean, if they took the wolves to the pound could they then kill them?
bttt
LOLOL!
That's GREAT!
I remember those cute clowns.
Thanks ever so much.
Thanks for the ping!
