WASHINGTON Senate Judiciary Chairman Arlen Specter said Wednesday he remains skeptical about a government surveillance program despite an explanation from Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.
The two met for an hour Sunday to discuss the rationale for the warrantless eavesdropping by the National Security Agency that President Bush approved without obtaining any court orders.
"I would summarize it by saying I have grave doubts about his legal conclusion," Specter, R-Pa., said of a meeting with Gonzales, who was confirmed before Specter's committee early this year. "I'm skeptical, but I'm prepared to listen."
Specter said he expects Gonzales to be the leadoff witness at a hearing on the surveillance, which he said he would like to start next month after confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito.

Surely the time has come for Specter to come clean and officially join the Dems...
Snarlin' Arlen can start with the Judges on the FISA Court..
If it was a live bear it would remind me of the old joke that ends with "you don't come here for the hunting do you?"
Bush really should not have campaigned for Specter.
Arizona Carolyn found this:
Judge Lamberth, who sits on the FISA court, has ties to islamic extremists and rejected many FBI warrant requests, prior to 9/11.
FBI whistleblowers specifically mentioned him to Attorney General Ashcroft right after 9/11.

I want Specter to fall down and break his hip this month.
I'm starting to wonder if ol' Arlen isn't really SPECTRE and we should let 007 have at him.
Whatever it is Specter wants, "it" is fortunately outside of his committee's jurisdiction.
And from another thread today we learned that the FISA court rejected more warrant applications during the Bush administration than the previous 4 administrations (24 years) combined.
I suppose thes morons would rather we all get blow up huh ? I'd impeach the president if he DIDN"T wire tap these terrorist b*stards..In the name of politics the Dems ould have us all killed. I wouldn't doubt they would secretly cheer another 9/11 attack if it made Bush look bad. That's ALL this is about ..Hating Bush ..NOTHING more..Logic dosen't even enter into it .
Specter is not at all a disappointment. He's living up to what most expected of him...an archaic POS!
"Repugnant"
No. He really isn't. He's exactly the man he always has been and I'd be shocked if he behaved any other way.
I volunteered for Pat Toomey in the primary.
Someone in the know, with money and access to the media has to make the issue as to why protecting our citizens is a crime or an impeachable crime.
Senator Spector is IMHO is a person addicted to being loved by the masses. Turn the heat up on this turkey and document him as loving the imaginary rights of possible foreign and domestic terrorists over the people who live and work here.
No mercy for this guy. He was kept in office by the President's assistance and has done nothing since except betray him to the prevailing political winds. Besides everything else Spector lacks courage.
I really really wish when Arlen was stepping in it several years ago the chant "hey hey ho ho alren specters gotta go" would have caught on.
Some days I'd just like to donate that man to the Dems.
Perhaps we should let him know it's first come, first serve...we'd like Able Danger hearings first.
