If everybody lives to 1000, the first thing that would go would be children. Won't be allowed.

Raising the retirement age to 978.

Exactly. Aging is a technical problem and there's no reason it can't be solved eventually, though I think Kurzweil is being unrealistic about his schedule. If people can live indefinitely in good health due to radical developments in biotechnology and nanotechnology, the reason for entitlements such as Social Security and Medicaid disappears. Take your 25 year old body and get back to work, grandpa.

"Why would anyone want to live 1,000 years?"
To collect Social Security, to berate everyone around as milksots and greenhorns... the list is endless [imagine a mother-in-law who is immortal!]

It would not be good for any kind of progress, especially in science. All the tired old theories would hang around along with their proponents. They say physics advances when the old generation of physicists dies.

Funny you should post this thread today.

This morning, I just started re-reading Larry Niven's "Ringworld".

The book starts off with the spry and sassy Loius Wu celebrating his 200th birthday.

You say that in jest, but it would really be true. If you work your ass off for the first 100 years, you could live off the interest income for the other 900.
