Understanding Progressives, aka Liberals
Vanity, self | 12/27/05 | Billhilly

A number of years ago I bought a four wheel drive SUV. It was a lot of fun to drive, and it would go through snow up to the bumper. It was also fun to drive in the sand along the shore, and because I liked to surf fish, I accidentally discovered the essence of liberalism, or progressivism.

Driving in deep sand along a sea shore can get you into a bad situation pretty quickly as I was to discover when my SUV began to show signs of completely bogging down. It was then when I realized what liberals do all the time, but mostly after losing another election. I just put my SUV in reverse and backed out through the ruts that got me there in the first place, and called it progress.

In deep sand it is sometimes only possible to travel in the ruts previously made by others. That leaves a lot of area undiscovered until someone with a wider wheel or higher ground clearance comes along and travels in places no one has gone before. Often, when that happens, those with the smaller wheels complain that the beach is being ruined by those who are going where they can't go, and they continue to drive in the old ruts due to their greater concern for the "environment" or their disdain for those who have found a better way to travel.

Some (progressives) convince the governing authorities to restrict access to the beach to the small rut vehicles because they do not want to share with the less sensitive or more adventurous (people making real progress) types. Those municipalities begin to sell stickers to place on your vehicles to identify which ones are allowed to go on the beach.

Succeeding there, the small rut types decide to walk only on certain sections of the beach, and soon signs begin to appear placing restrictions on vehicular access, paid for by their kindred office holders using your money. The office holders, always eager to find new sources of revenue, are easily persuaded by the "progressive" arguments.

We are beginning to see a pattern here, aren't we? The small rut gang has empowered the big government types to only allow activities approved by by themselves, no matter how restrictive, and they have a name for it. Progressive.

Now, just imagine a hike across the wide expanse of ANWAR. More progress!

Good post. Ah! Maybe this should go on the the wish list: "The Trivium by Sister Miriam Joseph Rauh" as the 'Trivium' is a rigorous and utterly delightful presentation of the three areas that form the basis for all learning: logic, grammar, and rhetoric.

Human Events Book Service - 'Trivium'

And yes I know only conservatives will read it because liberal can not be concerned with facts.
