Hehehehe- you're exactly right- and last night my 14 year-old informed me that he needed a "# 10 torx driver" to fix his X-Box. Bad enough Christmas is commercial- now it's also proprietary. Sigh- stocking -stuffer.

Actually, the torx driver has nothing to do with liberalism. It actually has more to do with good-old conservative capitalism. Microsoft doesn't want your son fixing his X-Box, they want him buying a new one. I had the exact same problem with my iPod. Opening it up was freaking difficult, and then I needed a T6 screwdriver (good luck finding one of those) - getting repair from Apple would cost about $260, and Apple recommends people just buy a new one. After all, how can a company make more money: selling you something new, or fixing something old?

On a side note, it is also less expensive to manufacture things with torx screws. You do not have to worry about the tool breaking as much. Although generally, companies use both torx and regular screws, with torx being put in places they don't want you opening up.
