The funny thing about college is that so many of my friends almost instantaneously (i.e. within a year) became conservatives after being left-leaning.

I think most kids enter college naively, just wanting to impress their professors. In high school, success is measured by your ability to parrot the facts your teachers tell you. Naturally, most kids start doing the same thing in college, though it transcends into parrotting lines of thought produced by a professor.

Once I got the hang of it, realized the value of socially conservative values, and took an economics course (I swear, teaching macroeconomics in high school would destroy liberalism), I began rebelling. Actually, a number of us did.

Just questioning the pedestal that diversity is placed on was a start. I'm a big fan of learning of other cultures and understanding where I came from and where others came from, but you'd think that, for instance, France was founded on liberte, egalite, and diversite. You start mentioning that diversity just causes conflict, that Nigeria would be a peaceful country if it wasn't diverse, that the mark of a successful society is one that integrates immigrants, and that the only way that unique cultures can even form is in isolation, and they'll start hunting your head.

Being a conservative is great. You know you're not that guy just sitting their nodding his head, but rather, you have to defend your viewpoints. This makes you the guy who has thought through things more thoroughly, and that can only be a good thing.

You were the one who was stuck on stupid for far longer than was reasonable. You didn't change your tune until you stuck your hand into his side.

FYI, this is not the first thread I have posted on.

"Nigeria would be a peaceful country if it wasn't diverse"

Good point. I remember bringing up the fact that Japan was a both one of the most successful countries and one of the least diverse in one of my classes and there was an embarrassed silence and the topic was quickly changed.

My son, age 23, says he's an anarchist.

Under anarchy its basically survival of the fittest as my dad once proved to me when I told him I was one. Anarchy isn't fun.......

I'd like to take that bet but...since I have been chatting with him at the conservative's chat room for a long time I won't take your money. This was not "scripted".

I know. I apologized up thread and spoke to Justin on the phone. He's the real deal.

I have a tendency toward cynicism; which I need to work on.

Exactly. You have to defend your right even to breathe.

Most of my lefty acquaintances won't even engage in a real debate. They are incapable. They "cocoon" themselves with other like-minded people and never have to defend what they believe. When you disagree with them, they call you a name and walk away.

Perhaps that is why their movement is basically bankrupt of intellectual heft.

My parents are (were? I don't know if they're still around) democraps. They were the room temperature IQ type. But I repeat myself. Anyhoo, they were the typical "Democrats are for the workin man, Republicans are for the rich" type. My political awakening came a little bit later than it did for Justin, but I had conservative leanings as a child.

I used to do one thing that really ticked them off, and it was a riot. One summer, my old man decided to build a garage, so I had to help. When I was laying bricks, I'd sing negro spirituals, like "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" and "Old Man River". The old drunk would yell at me to knock it off, and I'd say "Yessah Masser! You wanna see me do some softshoe?"

He'd turn the most interesting shades of red.

Good for you! I wish I was half as bright as you when I was your age. What was that blog you mentioned on the show yesterday? I'd like to check out your writings.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to visit my site. I've been writing for months and struggling to get visits, but that problem's now gone. I guess that's a big positive out of all this. I'm just happy that so many of you have rallied to support me, and I'll keep you all updated as any events transpire. Thanks again everyone.
