Gov. Tim Pawlenty displayed a bagfull of initiatives designed to help Minnesota veterans and military families on Monday, the most visible of which is a new Support Our Troops license plate that is available immediately.
The plates, featuring a bald eagle against an American flag backdrop, can be purchased for $18.50, plus a minimum $30 annual contribution.
The plates, which were approved by the Legislature and governor, went on sale Monday at license renewal stations around the state for cars, trucks and recreational vehicles. Motorcycle owners have to wait until spring.
Pawlenty, who visited Minnesota National Guard troops training in Mississippi this weekend, said the initiatives are new ways to express gratitude to veterans, and to those serving in the military.
When push comes to shove, and sadly sometimes it does, these are the folks who stand up and raise their hand and say they will be the defenders of our country and our values, of our freedoms and our principals, Pawlenty said.
Said Major Gen. Larry Shellito, adjutant general of the Minnesota National Guard: It is imperative that we take care of the families so that their loved ones overseas can focus on their life-threatening missions and they are not distracted because there might be a broken refrigerator.

GREAT Idea. The Anti-Warnics plaster their houses and cars with crap. We should do something to rebut them
I want one.
Me too. Governor Perry, how fast can you make this happen here in Texas? After all, we should have been first.
Me, too! Bob-the-Taxman-Taft, do something honorable before your term ends -- take note and give us Ohioans the same option!
I like Governor Pawlenty a lot better than the RINO names I hear mentioned for 2008. Adding Minnesota to the red column would be a plus.
This is gonna drive the peaceniks in the Twin Cities and Duluth with the "What Would Wellstone Do?" bumper stickers plumb crazy.
Look at what's being funded by the plates.
We already cover all that in Texas without a special plate...besides, supporting the troops goes without saying if you're in Texas (with the exception of Travis county).
I like this guy.
You forgot Ely ;-)
Sorry,we would like to bogart him for one more term ;-)
Well, either way he has to win reelection first in 2006.
Maybe Gov Pawlenty should do what Romney did and not run next year so he can run for president in '08. I think the GOP could do worse. And it probably will, sad to say. I think Pawlenty will be high on the list for VP candidates though, assuming he can win next year.
GWB ran for re-election and won in 1998 before running for the presidentcy a few months later. Bill the Impeached did the same thing also.
The Romney model is only for guys who can't get re-elected.
Sounds like a great idea and I applaud them. It is, however, a bit difficult to take seriously a group of people who chose such a short time ago to be governed by Jesse "The Body" Ventura.
