Pro-Family Leader Doubts Sincerity of Senator's New Hate Crimes Legislation Stance By Chad Groening (AgapePress) - A Virginia-based pro-family activist is skeptical about Senator George Allen's recent announcement that he no longer supports hate crimes legislation that includes "sexual orientation" as a protected status category.
In 2004 Allen voted in favor of a bill that added sexual orientation to the federal Hate Crimes Act, but recently he said he is reversing his previous position and will not support the measure this time. Joe Glover, president of the Family Policy Network, says he welcomes the senator's announcement but has doubts as to whether the Republican lawmaker is sincere in stating his new position on the inclusion of "sexual orientation" in hate crimes legislation -- a position stating opposition to what he once openly favored.
There is no question that "George Allen is not the pro-family, not the pro-life senator people would like to make him out to be," the Family Policy Network spokesman contends. Much to the contrary, he points out that Allen's office has been characterized as being "gay friendly," according to some sources.
"The homosexual activists in Washington, DC, have outed several members of George Allen's staff as being homosexuals," Glover asserts. "In fact, they call George Allen's office the gayest place on Capitol Hill. Now we didn't say that; the homosexual activists in Washington, DC, did."
George Allen has apparently decided to change his opinion on the issue of giving homosexuals protected status in hate crimes legislation now that he is possibly running for reelection and "perhaps has his eye on New Hampshire and Iowa," Glover says.
"But the question remains," he adds, "whether or not that's a sincere change of heart -- whether it will remain or whether or not George Allen will have other ways of helping the homosexual activists in Washington." In the meantime, the head of the Family Policy Network says, hopefully a presidential candidate will emerge who truly represents conservative, pro-family values.

"Hate Crimes" are discriminatory against everyone. Why is it that crimes against some people warrant greater punishment than crimes against others?
I agree that it shouldn't be in the legislation its just I think they are picking on George Allen quite a bit.
Hate is in the mind. "Hate Crimes" are thought crimes.
Punish the action not the thought.......
Exactly.
If someone hates someone and kills them, it is murder. If they hate someone and strikes them,it is assault.
Liberals define peace as "absence of opposition to their agenda".
Name one "hate" crime that doesn't fit the liberal agenda.
i.e. used his name.
In Senator Coburns (then a congressman) book,he details how this is actually a wide spread practise.
That said, Senator Allens record on abortion has been steller and solid, ironically, his comments have been odd, so either he is against abortion but not emotional or engaged on it or he just votes pro-life all the time.
This hate crime bill is crap, but this whole thing comes across as petty and personal, and for no apparent reason.
When someone does what you want them to do, there is no need to take a cheap shot at them, as this guy is doing.
New Hate Crimes and Hate Speech legilation should apply to the pathological partisan hatred expressed by the Democrat party members, e.g., Howard Dean.
He is against it now - what more do they want? Blood?
My mind is full of punishable offenses these days...I just keep on sayin', "That's nice", though, and walking down the street.
LOL!
Uh... Petty?
Think again. Take a look at the documentation they have on George Allen's pro-homosexual actions:

After reading that page, it appears he's got plenty of reason to doubt George Allen's sincerity.
