BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Iraqi security forces caught the most wanted man in the country last year, but released him because they didn't know who he was, the Iraqi deputy minister of interior said Thursday.
Hussain Kamal confirmed that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi -- the al Qaeda in Iraq leader who has a $25 million bounty on his head -- was in custody at some point last year, but he wouldn't provide further details.
A U.S. official couldn't confirm the report, but said he wouldn't dismiss it.
"It is plausible," he said.

Is there some new rule here that requires this be posted every ten minutes?
Sounds like a fish story to me.
One year old story, which we all heard one year ago. The media are pathetic.
See what happens when they don't renew the Patriot Act?
This is like the 1000 times this story has been posted in the last 24 hours and for one thousands times we need to say that it is a recycling of an old story from January 2005. CNN has recycled this old story yesterday to shed negative light on the very successful Iraqi elections of yesterday. It is pathetic beyond belief.
The same thing will happen if Zarqawi is caught sneaking into the US from Mexico.
yeah, it must be the same rule that says CNN must post it as 'breaking news' every time there is a vote in Iraq....
would peta approve? or no.
In the many stories that came out last year and earlier this year about his arrest actually make mention of him being released? And being released because of "mistaken identity"? If so, I'd like to post those stories on another site if you have them.
"Sounds like a fish story to me"
Me too. I thought he vowed never to be caught alive.
Posted, reposted, What's your problem,
I can understand that, seing as how they all look alike and all. ;-)
maybe it was a different Official reporting it this time.
Don't have the posts but yes the story was he was captured and released because they didn't know it was him. I knew that the second I heard the story again, and it being a one year old story I couldn't believe they were running it (again) as a new story. I think on other threads others have posted the links.
I heard they thought he was sean penn.....
That's alright. Thanks anyway. I don't really have the patience to go through all the other threads on this topic right now. Too close to the end of the day.
