Bill Kristol, executive editor of The Weekly Standard, said Senators Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Carl Levin (D-Mich.) are "crazy if they believe that Americans dont want to win in Iraq.
Kristol, appearing Wednesday on Fox News Channel, made his comments in response to a press conference called by the Democrats prior to President Bushs speech Wednesday on the progress in Iraq and the war on terrorism.
Reid and Levin, looking grim during the press conference, both droned about how the presidents plan to "stay the course in Iraq does not give hope to Americans living in the United States.
"This nation roots for success, Kristol said. "If the war goes badly, theyll blame President Bush, and rightly so. But they [Reid and Levin] looked defeatist, like they are half-rooting for failure.
"They are so grudging in their praise for Bush and the Iraqi people who are turning out to vote in this weeks elections at a great personal sacrifice, that I think Americans will reject or dismiss their comments completely.
Kristol said the Democrats are foolishly and appallingly pinning their hopes on future setbacks in Iraq to help drive down President Bushs approval numbers, which have been rising in the past few weeks.
"Politically, patriotically and from a human point of view, I dont understand why these Democrats dont lay off the politics and just watch the voting over the next few days, he said. "Americans are rooting for victory for our soldiers and for the Iraqi people.
On every issue, foreign or domestic, the Democrats care little what is good for America. Their first and only concern is what will comprise political gain for themselves.
Where are Dan Rather and Mary Mapes?
bttt
I'll be as clear as I can about what is driving the Demos.
They cannot accept they lost. It's that simple. They cannot accept they've been rejected, that their policy was rejected, that another policy they didn't put forward is successful. A policy formed by the Bush administration.
Bush is illegitimate. He stole the election. Twice. Republicans used the deaths of Americans in an "unfortunate" event like 9-11 to soar into a Majority in the Congress. That majority is illegitimate because it was a freak event. The House only picked up a Majority because they lied and distorted and carried forth scandels.
The Democrats will not admit the American people consciencely took in, discarded, and voted for their opposition based on policy. Until they are willing to admit that, they are lost in this black hole.
Refusing to admit they and their ideas were legitimately defeated, forces them in a democracy (unless they want to try the suicide bomber route) to keep running past campaigns until they get the result they want. Eventually, they feel, fraud and misdirection will not be successful and they'll triumph as the Majority. This is their last resort. They have tried the Courts, but that's starting to turn against them too. They'll run against Bush until a) they accept their legitimate losses in ideas and votes b) until they win an election on the platform.
their graves will have been desecrated by the muzzies
Boxer and Pelosi will come out and defend Ried and Levin by attacking Mr Kristol's comments light years before they would come out and attack imagonnajihad's(President of Iran) comments.
This bunch will be rooting for their own demise if they keep it up. And I hope they do.
Reid and Levin are playing to their Democrat voters, most of whom are anti-war.
"They're not just half-rooting for failure, they're trying to create failure in Iraq."
Half, I agree. You are right.
The DemocRATS are all swallowing the McGovern cyanide pill for electoral success. They never learn. In the end anti-Americanism, hatred for the military and hatred for Bush will not muster a majority of voters for DemocRATS in 2006.
The dems are devoid of any new ideads or original thoughts. They have no plan, no vision, they've simply become the party of "NO!" They are betting their entire political future on Iraq being a failure. The dems (with the exception of Joe Lieberman) are acting pathetic, disgraceful and downright unpatriotic.
And it's so ironic that they would even embrace this strategy. While they may take solace in the fact the anti-war movement did have an effect on policy, that effect was still extremely detrimental to the Democrats. The liberals may have won a policy victory, but the Democrats still suffered an overwhelming electoral defeat in the shadows of that victory. Even more ironic is that they would still do this knowing what the consequences were of that victory...i.e., the genocide and brutality that followed.
Come on Bill yes you do understand. The dems, with the help of their pals in the MSM, have invested their political future on failure. Iraq and the economy have to fail for them to be successful at the polls and they're so deeply entrenched into this now it's almost impossible for them to get out of it.
They are rooting for failure, all the way, not half. Thats because they hate Bush, hate America, hate the military, hate western culture, hate you, hate the family, hate police, hate Christianity,...
The democrats just prove that they are not the ones to run our country. Any attacks would be met with surrender, any conflict with "cut and run".
They are too stupid to understand why we went to war, what the plan is, and what the purpose of the effort is. They are also so un-American as to ignore the effect their rhetoric has on the men defending our liberties.
I will never vote to give a democrat a leadership position in this country. They have proved they are unwilling or unable to love America and to defend it.
We should be thankful they are mouthing off like they are - they are showing who they really support and it is not America or our soldiers.
A problem will still remain because the Pubs will not pile on the Dems losing strategy. They will mew about compromise and how WE ALL WANT TO WIN, when that is a bald-faced lie. Now would be the time to pile on the lefties with ads, forcing GOP bills through before the Xmas vacation. They will not because even Frist says there 'is not enough time'. I hate that type of reasoning when we are the majority. See Patriot Renewal for more of the same!
Good post, and may I add a couple thoughts?
Since there will be no surrender in the classic sense, Dems see a chance to paint the end of this operation as a defeat, no matter the outcome. They will keep trumpeting the number of dead, and talk of body bags and the maimed, while ignoring the facts on the ground, which extend well beyond Iraq.
Bush is creating an earthquake that is shaking the entire Middle East and the Islamic World to its' foundations. That is a long view action, and Dems are not interested.
The complete size and nature of this victory will not be evident for some time, and Dems are short-sighted, as in focused on November, 2006.
November, 2006, their next huge electoral defeat.
Half-rooting for failure? The same Democrats who want Rumsfeld to retire, and the military in Iraq to redeploy to Okinawa? Where's Kristol been the last 2 years?
Sadly, the Democrats hate Bush (because he's a Christian) sooooo much, that they would want their country to FAIL rather than Bush have a victory!!! It's disgusting!!!
