Reilly: Bible studies OK in dorm rooms
The president of the University of Wisconsin System said today that university resident assistants should be allowed to conduct Bible studies and other religious activities in their dorms.
It was the first time Kevin Reilly has voiced his personal opinion on the subject, which has inspired much controversy in recent months after a resident assistant at UW-Eau Claire complained that he was prohibited from leading Bible study in his dorm.
Im inclined to take a Wisconsin common sense approach to this, Reilly told lawmakers at a legislative hearing on the topic. It seems resident assistants should be able to do anything they want as long as its legal and ethical, as long as other students dont feel coerced, and that in doing those activities, they remain approachable.
Reilly is putting together a task force of university officials who will craft a system-wide policy on what residents can and cant do in their dorms. He cautioned that turning his opinion into a policy could be difficult.
That it's even a question is truly sad.
At the same time I can drink, smoke pot and throw wild orgies in my dorm room (in the name of privacy.)
Why can't I study the Bible?
"That it's even a question is truly sad."

My thoughts exactly.
It's nice to know that Kevin Reilly has allowed the Bill of Rights.
Why are they 'Badgering' them... ?
OMG! They had better come up with a University policy on this quick! Heaven knows there's nothing else that one could point to that guarantees the right of Americans to freely exercise their religion!
Kevin Reilly's opinion on this is, quite frankly, irrelevant. But it is nice to know that, for the record, university officials won't be oppressing UofW students for exercising their First Amendment rights.
I call upon all aluma and alumni to withhold their generous contributions until this issue is properly resolved.
How nice. Most books in college dorm rooms go unopened the whole semester. That kids want to do some extra studying is a refreshing change, too bad, it even had to be asked to do so.
The job of RA is one that is paid for and RAs are technically
on the clock 24/7
UW Eau Claire is a public state school
You cannot drink or smoke anything in a dorm room. That's pretty much standard everywhere
This is a classic example of rules-based moronic thinking.
Dorm = college = government funding
Bible studies = religion
Govt funding cannot support religion.
Wherever religion even touches government in some tangential way - this will come up.
Actually, you are incorrect. As an RA, you share the duties with other RA's in shifts. Otherwise you could never have a free moment to study or go to classes. The RA's work out the schedules amongst themselves.
You mean the Communist are going to allow Bible's on their campus? I thought only underground Christians were allowed in the CCA (Communist Campuses of America).
Wonder what he thinks of underage drinking in dorms? Having done more than my fair share, I think that it can safely be said that students won't trash the dorm and throw up all over the bathroom after attending a bible studies class.
So what if an RA wants to go to church?
Not where I went to school. So long as what you were smoking was legal, and if you were of age when drinking, the school didn't care. And actually, they really didn't care about underage drinking, kind of gave a wink and a nudge. Provided that everything was well under control, my RA's really just didn't want to know.
How long ago was that? At this university, it is the hard and fast rule. Students have to hide everything.
