(Washington-AP, Dec. 12, 2005 7:53 AM) _ Most Iraqis disapprove of the presence of U.S. forces in their country, yet they are optimistic about Iraq's future and their own personal lives, according to a new poll.

More than two-thirds of those surveyed oppose the presence of troops from the United States and its coalition partners and less than half, 44 percent, say their country is better off now than it was before the war, according to an ABC News poll conducted with Time magazine and other media partners.

But Iraqis are surprisingly upbeat on many fronts, the poll suggests.

Three-quarters say they are confident about the parliamentary elections scheduled for this week. More than two-thirds expect things in their country to get better in the coming months.

Attitudes about Iraq's future were sharply different in the Sunni provinces and other parts of Iraq, however. Only a third in the Sunni regions were optimistic about their country's future. Shiites, who with the Kurds dominate the current parliament, had a much more positive view than the Sunnis of their own personal safety and whether their own lives are going well.

A majority of both the Sunni and Shiite population say they favor a unified country, however.

In other poll findings:

--Two-thirds express confidence in the Iraqi army and in police.

--Half now say the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq was wrong, up from 39 percent in February 2004.

--More than six in 10 say they feel safe in their neighborhoods, up from 40 percent in June 2004.

--Six in 10 say local security is good, up from half in February 2004.

But the national concern mentioned most often is security, named by 57 percent.

A fourth of those surveyed, 26 percent, say U.S. forces should leave now, and another 19 percent say troops should leave after those chosen in this week's election take office. The other half say U.S. troops should stay until security is restored, 31 percent, until Iraqi forces can operate independently, 16 percent, or longer, 5 percent.

The poll was conducted by Oxford Research International face-to-face with 1,711 Iraqis age 15 and over from Oct. 8 to Nov. 22. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.

Where did Oxford find enough trained surveyors who speak the language?

It's increasingly difficulty to take any of these polls seriously. The mainstream media has invested in US failure and seems desperate to vindicate themselves by any means necessary. The MSM has lost all credibility.

Is it disapprove of the presence of U.S. forces in their country OR do they look forward to when Iraqi troops guard and protect their own country??

Wonder what the exact wording in the question was

I agree that the Iraqi's don't want us there; however, I believe they don't want us to leave just yet. I would feel the same if I were them.

WHOA, HOLD ON A SECOND...

The headline says:

Poll: Most Iraqis oppose presence of U.S. troops, optimistic about future

Yet the article says this:

A fourth of those surveyed, 26 percent, say U.S. forces should leave now, and another 19 percent say troops should leave after those chosen in this week's election take office. The other half say U.S. troops should stay until security is restored, 31 percent, until Iraqi forces can operate independently, 16 percent, or longer, 5 percent.

By their own measure, 52% want US troops to STAY until security is restored! And, adding the 19% who want US troops to stay through elections, that means an overwhelming 71% APPROVE of US troop presence for the time being!!

Yet most anti-war lefties will read the headline and view it as support for the Murthas and Deans of the world who keep repeating this bogus idea that Iraqis want the US out right now.

Is there any better example (today at least) of how the MSM uses headlines to manipulate the same weak-minded buffoons who form their world view on reading bumper stickers?

"Oppose" as "we wish they never came" or "oppose" as in "we look forward to the day we don't need these heroes to protect us"?

Once again, less than a half of Iraqis calls for an immidiate withdraw, meaning that for a certain amount of time, the majority of Iraqis "tolerates" coalition force presence, even there were lack of thrust they have for US. In other words, "realism". Democrats should face the reality that Iraqis still feels a need of US military presence, and that Iraqis are not calling for an :immidiate" withdraw. It is our responsibility to clean up the mess, and we can't have the job unfinished risking chance of terrorists having a safe ground in Iraq to launch attacks on US.

Not many want to have their country occupied by a foreign military but Iraqis would like it far less if that military was jihadist.

Not stated but in the same poll -

Specifically, 26 percent of Iraqis say U.S. and other coalition forces should “leave now”
and another 19 percent say they should go after the government chosen in this week’s
election takes office;

that adds to 45 percent. Roughly the other half say coalition forces
should remain until security is restored (31 percent), until Iraqi security forces can
operate independently (16 percent) or longer (five percent).

Slightly biased reporting from actual poll
