Burned almond scent can be cyanide.
That was what I was thinking...

Is there a drug manufacturer near there? That can put off some strange odors.

Someone is testing to see how far the scent travels with various wind directions, then eventually they'll release something deadly.
One time when we had a problem, the plumber used peppermint flavoring to determine a sewer leak. He said if even the tinest bit of peppermint odor escapes it's immediately apparent.
Freeper MamaDearest mentioned the White House conducted a bioterrorism exercise in the past few days.

it's likely biodefense-related, rather than bioterror. AWW. No wonder our government is not worried about bird flu. They got us covered:')

At the end of your third link is posted a recipe for Molasses Cookies, also a Recipe for Gingerbread. After reading about the disaster, who would want to cook with Molasses?

"AWW."
Am I misreading your reply, as sarcasm? Why would biodefense not be as plausible an explanation as any other?
To: uglybiker
LOL...I hardly think that anyone can really "blame" the Masons for the "smell".
To: uglybiker
So ~ they're piling on the Masons again. *sigh*

It would be disturbing if a bio/chemical agent was released with a pleasant smell to encourage inhaling
[
Phosgene gas may appear colorless or as a white to pale yellow cloud. At low concentrations, it has a pleasant odor of newly mown hay or green corn, but its odor may not be noticed by all people exposed. At high concentrations, the odor may be strong and unpleasant. ]
