Investment research firm PiperJaffray today reported that its checks of Apple retail stores reveal that Apple is "highly stocked" heading into the holiday season, while third-party retailers are "struggling to replenish" supplies. Reiterating an "outperform" rating, the firm said that the distribution limitations may limit iPod sales and that Apple may not be able hit iPod shipment numbers estimated by some Wall Street analysts. Late last week, 8 of 10 Apple stores had all iPods in stock; however, only 2 of the 20 third-party retailers, however, had all varieties of iPod. Inventory for both the iPod and nano remains spotty at third-party retailers, with 17 out of 20 indicating that they are missing at least one type of nano (2GB or 4GB) and 15 of 20 missing at least one of the larger (30GB or 60GB) iPods.
The firm is currently modeling for total iPod shipments of 9.0 million. "We do believe slight upside to our estimate is achievable, but we do not expect Apple will be able to ship the number of units that are already anticipated in some Street models."
"Apple will likely be unable to achieve some high-end Street estimates for Dec-05, but more importantly, we see a continuation of strong demand for both iPod and Mac. Additionally, we believe 2006 will be a more robust product year than 2005 (see details on expectations for 2006 on page 4 of this note)."
Too bad the economy is sucking so badly.
Yeah. XBox 360 sales are pretty bad too...
I don't buy into this too much.
A few of these analysts have set ridiculous estimates for how many would be sold this christmas.
There is plenty of ways to get the Ipod you want before Dec 25th.
Amazon.com
Apple stores
etc, etc.....
Amazon just came out saying that the Ipod is now the #1 electronics device its selling for the holidays.
Apple is going to make a killing this christmas on these.
I could see this coming with the nano release. This quarter was going to be huge for Apple. I bought a bunch of apple computer shares three months ago and going to ride it till the rally is over. Booyah!!!
LOL!! Good one. ;)

Really? What for?
BTW, found a ton at Circuit City a few weeks ago. No one else had any. Probably all sold out by now.
It is Apple's to lose and it appears that they are doing just that.
Wonder when there will be serious competitors.
Wow!
An Apple thread and no update from Hank Rearden on the queer lifestyle.
iPods? Aren't they mostly for music? If so, why the rush to buy them? Do people actually like music? I can't believe that they do! Hell, if they did, we might have had some good music over the past 30 years! I find this obsession with iPods to be symptomatic of gratituitous consumerism and personal isolation from the real world of angry talk radio! ;)
Well, when it's whiny dumbasses doing the stealing, it's less of a problem.
Same story here. Bought one iPod Nano as a gift a couple of weeks ago at Circuit City, and then tried buying a second one one this past Friday - all sold out (the local Best Buy may have some iPods (any model) in stock by spring). I ended up ordering the second Nano from Apple, and they said it should ship today. However, they weren't going to be able to ship a case for it until mid-January! But I found one of those locally.
Some say that it is due to a shortage of flash memory. Others say it is a deliberate effort by Apple to keep demand and prices high.
I could sell 100 Nanos before Christmas if I had them. However the profit margin is very slim.
Hooverville.
I had no interest in an IPOD until I saw that they have audio books. Yes, I'm a huge nerd.
Next year 25 cents at a HUGE YARD SALE!!! in your neighbourhood.
