Since it was discovered in 1976, the Ebola virus has killed more than 1,200 people in scattered outbreaks in Central Africa, the World Health Organization calculates. But while health workers have managed to contain the outbreaks, scientists have been frustrated that they do not know the virus's hiding place in nature.

Fruit bats are a delicacy... Too bad it takes half a dozen to feed one person. ;-)

Good to see some progress being made on this, maybe the reservoir critters will lead to finding a way to fight this and related hemmoragic fevers.

I missed this from the NYT. I was having a discussion with my public health friends today and they mentioned it. Since the article was linked to the Slimes it missed me.

Fruitbats are now linked to Metapneumoviruses, SARS, and Ebola. The geographical region for the fruitbats runs from Indonesia to the African Congo. I wonder what North American bats carry besides rabies?
