Politics - The King County prosecutor will check Republican charges of laxness in signups

SEATTLE -- King County Prosecutor Norm Maleng says he's ready to investigate questionable voter registrations following Republican challenges that he contends show a serious flaw in voter rolls statewide in Washington.

Maleng said his office is prepared to investigate voters who have registration addresses at non-residential locations such as private-mailbox businesses.

"It is not acceptable that these incomplete and illegal registrations are allowed to stand without being corrected," he said at a news conference earlier this week.

Maleng's involvement was good news to the state Republican Party.

"We're very glad to see the prosecutor's office taking this seriously," Chairman Chris Vance said. "This is all moving in the right direction."

Maleng rejected Democratic County Executive Ron Sims' request that the Republican prosecutor investigate the county Republican vice chairwoman on possible perjury in filing wrongful challenges.

On Oct. 26, about two weeks before the Nov. 8 election, the vice chairwoman challenged registrations of more than 1,900 voters on grounds that all had listed non-residential addresses. She later withdrew more than 170 challenges. Only about 200 of the others voted Nov. 8.

In refusing Sims' request, Maleng said there was no proof that the Republican official intentionally lied.

Sims was disappointed. "There are no consequences for filing unsubstantiated challenges now," he said.

On Monday, after a hearing last week, the King County Canvassing Board rejected more than 70 percent of the challenges to registrations for people who voted.

One reason cited was that Republicans did not follow state law requiring challengers to provide voters' residential addresses.

Maleng called the legal reasoning "strained" and said he plans to ask Secretary of State Sam Reed and Attorney General Rob McKenna whether providing residential addresses is necessary.

His office is ready to investigate and provide those addresses if they are needed to make the challenges stick, Maleng said.

Meanwhile, county elections Director Dean Logan still must consider hundreds of challenged registrations for people who didn't vote Nov. 8.

"A little late..."

It takes a while to destroy evidence and buy off people.

Before anyone actually thinks this will go anywhere, let me remind you of the King County computerized payroll project a few years ago. The county decided to upgrade their payroll system. They spent $26,000,000 putting the system together. It NEVER worked. NEVER. The county ended up paying to upgrade the existing system for far less money.

And what happened to the two people responsible for the $26,000,000 fiasco? They had their contracts bought out. Interestingly enough, there never was a clear picture on where the $26,000,000 went.

Actually, the democrats had taken the position that you can't CHALLENGE the registration of a voter on the grounds that they did not submit their residential address unless you could identify the ACTUAL residential address.

In other words, it was not enough to show that the voter's address was a post box in a mail center, you had to provide the voter's actual address--in another county, another state, another country, or whereever. Even if you could prove that the mail was being forwarded to China--too bad, no specific residential address, so that voter still gets to vote!

Not much point to fighting it or voting, for that matter.

You got that one right. That's just about the only time you see him in public.

They did that because that is the law. They know. They made the election laws in this state, and they are designed to keep them in power. The party in power does all the counting, does all the enhancements, does all the canvassing to "fix" registrations to match votes already cast, they just made it even easier to submit multiple registrations/votes (just check "none" on type of ID), and they make laws that make it impossible to enforce any other laws, such as the one where you would have to prove where the fictitious voter lived if he doesn't live inside a mailbox.

I believe the law that was largely responsible for derailing Rossi's challenge was that the challenge to a voter's registration had to be made prior to the election. Indeed, after King County's stalling on most of the data the Rossi team needed to submit it's case and never presenting some of it until well after the contest - and still trying to keep it hidden for this latest election, the only votes that were changed was when the rats brought in a handful of felons who had been caught illegally voting, and claimed they voted for Rossi. The judge immediately accepted their word at face value as the only credible evidence presented, and took that many (5 I think) votes away from Rossi.

He simply ignored everything else that had happened in the trial up to that point, citing that the Rossi team didn't meet the statute, which of course was impossible. (Stefan Sharkansky of soundpolitics.com has worked tirelessly since then to inspect votes & registrations that the Rossi camp were never allowed to see in an effort to clean up as much as he could before this election as well as discover what happened to the last one, and has been fought at every turn. I think it was his footwork that prompted the challenge by the state GOP on the mailbox registrations)

At this point Rossi had the choice of taking this 3 ring circus to the State Supreme Big Top, where every sitting judge (I believe) was placed by a (D) governor over the last 20 - 30 years. Odds were wildy against him there, as they had already reversed themselves after Rossi had won twice to allow King County to continue to keep finding/enhancing/counting new lost & found votes after the other counties had shut down during the third vote, so he declined to appeal to the supremes, presumably (IMO) to keep this sham from becoming a national precedent. The Secretary of State, State Attorney General and US Attorney abandoned the people then, as they will now.

The state is rigged.
