This deception is furthered by our armed forces belief that we can just enter ancient Mesopotamia and tell the locals about the benefits of a legislative assembly. While our European ancestors were hanging from trees, these ancient people were writing algebra and solving quadratic equations. Now we feel compelled to strong-arm them into accepting the spoils of capitalism and laissez-faire society. Dont get me wrong, I enjoy watching Britney Spears on MTV and driving to McDonalds, but do you honestly believe that Sunnis, Shias and Kurds want our Western ideas of entertainment and freedom imposed on them? Think again.

A boy genius, for sure.
"Hanging from trees?" He's an idiot.
Actually, after the first Gulf War any resolutions (articles of surrender) that Saddam broke meant we could LEGALLY go in there as if the first war never ended. The WMDs were just icing on the cake so to speak.
And, if we didn't wait around so long for world opinion we could very well have found them.
Suggestion, just don't re-up.
Johnny Jihad had any cousins?
Based just off of what the letter writer said, I can tell that he/she's an idiot.
STFU REMF or resign. Gutless wonder. How do these losers get their Comissions?
What does Capt. Jeff Pirozzi consider 500 tons of uranium, sarin and mustard gas to be, if not WMDs?
Better suggestion. Resign.
This guy is only looking for the attention he does not get as part of a team. He gets it by stabbing the rest of his soldiers in the back.
Since it is an all volunteer force, he needs to leave immediately!!
I'm surprised stars and stripes printed this. I bet some heads are going to roll because they did!
But what's the alternative for this boy wonder? I doubt "school is for him", and he just doesen't know what he wants to do with his life! But, hey.. you guys are colonialists!
Well, as you can see...not all the soldiers are in it for the love of God and country. However, I'd bet he's one of only a handful. We quit subscribing to the S&S because it is more liberal than the NYT! We read no newspaper and all our news comes from the internet.
Bet he is either a "Jag" officer, or pilots a desk.
doesn't sound like a warrior.
The DNC must be salivating another possible impeacher for impeachment of 2007. Wonder what congressional district, could he be from California???
Before everyone starts to flame up, there are a lot of troops that do feel this way. While I personally don't, I'll say that the military and the government has done basically nothing to help the average guy know why he was sent to Iraq. There was no 'Why we fight' films like in WWII. The vast majority of troops don't know any more than what they see on the news. So, forgive them if they feel tricked. I've been to Iraq twice, and I've yet to have anyone explain to me why it was worth risking my life.
We started the war based on a lie, and well finish it based on a lie. ... I am not fooled by the constant fabrication of democracy and freedom touted by our leadership at home and overseas.
Again, that's not an uncommon feeling. I'm not saying it's right, but some people do think that. If we had made that a bigger point before going in, it wouldn't seem contrived now.
This deception is furthered by our armed forces belief that we can just enter ancient Mesopotamia and tell the locals about the benefits of a legislative assembly.
This, obviously, is wrong. You could replace 'ancient Mesopotamia' with 'Imperial Japan' or 'Nazi Germany', and see that people always think we can't democratize a nation at gunpoint. Clearly, we can, and have, and will again.
Actually, they do. They like American movies. They all, and I mean all, like Tom and Jerry. I've met Iraqis that know more about American rappers and hip-hop stars than I do. They definitely like porn. They seem to enjoy voting, and arguing politics. They are a repressed and wacked out bunch, but they've been through a lot. To say that they don't want to have freedom or fun is to deny that they're people.
Anyway, I think that this article does express a lot of commonly held views, and our government has done nothing to inform and educate people. If soldiers feel this way, it's because the government sent them to war without telling them why. It's not exactly fair to blame them for being confused.
Oh, this is going to reflect badly on his next OER....
