Thousands of buildings have collapsed and 11 people have been killed after a strong earthquake rattled east China on Saturday morning (local time). The China National Seismic Observation Network says the quake measured 5.7 on the Richter scale and struck at 8:49am.
A local official has told AFP a total of 8,072 buildings have been destroyed in Jiujiang county as a result of the quake.
"Six people were killed in Jiujiang county," the local official said.
"Another 247 were injured and 8,072 buildings were toppled."
An official in nearby Ruichang city says five people have been killed there, while 39 have been injured.
He says the casualty figures from the two locations do not overlap.
8,000+ buildings 'toppled'but only 5 or 6 dead? something doesn't sound right
wheres fema?
Maybe this has something to do with it?
Maybe George Noory's earthquake predicter warned them in time on Coast to Coast and they got out of the buildings.
first reports are always low because they haven't recovered all the bodies ... remember when the first tsunami count was just about a hundred or so ...
Each building had only 1/1000 of a Chinese occupying same at the time.
Earthquake Jolts East China's Jiangxi Province
2005-11-26 11:57:40 CRIENGLISH.com
An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck a region between Jiujiang, a well-known summer resort on middle reaches of the Yangtze River, and Ruichang, both in east China's Jiangxi Province, at 8:49 a.m. Saturday, China National Seismic Observation Network said.
The epicenter was monitored to be at 29.7 north latitude, 115.7 east longitude, according to the sources.
No damage is reported thus far.

and only 3 cases of bird flu have been reported in china.
you can ceratinly rely on the chicoms for accurate reporting.
How do they come up with "8,072" right off the bat??
Sure....
communism has a great history for being anal rententive with facts... :)
It occurred about 5 hours ago - Friday, November 25, 2005 at 07:49:38 PM (EST) - Eastern Standard (New York, Toronto, Jamaica)
Media has the stopwatch ready to time how long it takes to make a statement. Then the media always adds a few days to that.
Maybe it is the count of all of the buildings in the area.
Lets see if the mayor of New Orleans and Hugo Chavez step in to help out?
Just a for-what-it's-worth...hours after the tsunami...I posted a hypothetical, "Why would God kill 30,000 people at once" thread...wanting a real good theological discussion.
I was roundly flamed. All the posters said, "HA!!! There aren't 30,000 people dead...you're just listening to the hype."
At that time...the news reports were 15,000 dead. I was exaggerating for effect....
Earthquake in China = Stir-Fry
little did you know that it was a low ball number.
Of course they know exactly how many buildings collapsed, and they know that only a few people died. This is the glory of Communism. EVERYTHING is under control, all is good for the masses. Everything is in order. Too bad WE can't do the same thing here or Katrina would never have happened. ;)
I had no idea.
I am not sure with something like that anyone could predict the numbers.
Depends on what you call a building. 8,000 reed huts fell down.
The prediction for a major disaster of sorts is supposed to be for Nov 29. I guess Noory will call this one "close enough."
Because saying 8,000 sounds a little made-up, so add a some numbers to that to make it sound more random.
Depends on the buildings. Straw huts could do it, precast concretes couldn't.
I'm glad Pres Bush got his visit there out of the way before Rove started experimenting with his latest earthquake model.
When they are made of clay and straw, those figures seem correct
Now, was the building in that picture collapsed or not? It's hard to tell if that's how they usually build them. It does look pretty safe in a quake, though. Might get konked on the head with a board, maybe.
I wonder if they build their skyscrapers with the same materials and in that 'primative' style that seems so popular these days. It would be a rough ride down from the top floor.

Shallow "quake."
Only 31,000 feet down (oil well depth ranges), and a vibrational measurement about as large as a nuke test.
Interesting coincidences.
Thousands of buildings collapse in China earthquake: official
Thousands of buildings collapsed after a strong earthquake rattled east China's Jiangxi province today morning, a local official said.
A total of 8,072 rooms were destroyed in Jiujiang county as a result of the quake, measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale, said a county official by telephone.
In China, earthquake damage is measured not in buildings, but in rooms. A rural dwelling typically has two or three rooms.
Shockwaves could be felt as far away as Wuhan, a large industrial city on the Yangtze river more than 100 kms away, the sina.Com website reported.
The website carried photos reportedly taken in Wuhan early today, showing cracked walls and toppled mannequins inside shops.
Seems to be an odd place for an earthquake. It's well outside of where you would expect to see some activity.
Quake in east China kills twelve
BEIJING (Reuters) - An earthquake killed 12 people, injured nearly 400 and destroyed 8,500 homes in Jiangxi province in eastern China on Saturday morning, the official Xinhua agency reported.
Some 130,000 homes were damaged in the worst-hit Jiujiang and Ruicheng counties, while 420,000 people were evacuated to safer areas as emergency officials rushed tents to the zone to shelter the homeless.
The quake, which measured 5.7 on the Richter scale, hit at 8.49 am local time. It was followed around 20 minutes later by two aftershocks, Xinhua said.
By noon local time 6 people were reported dead in Jiujiang county, while 247 were injured, 8000 houses had collapsed and 29,000 were damaged, Xinhua said.
The U.S. Geological Survey said on its Web site (www.earthquake.usgs.gov/recenteqsww/Quakes/usfwbf.htm) that the earthquake was "moderate" and of magnitude 5.5 at a depth of 10kms (6.2 miles).
Officials there said they were still assessing the extent of the quake, while a hotel receptionist who declined to give her name told Reuters that residents had been scared but rural areas were probably worst hit.
"You could hear windows vibrating, everyone ran out into the street. But I haven't heard of any buildings collapsing in the city, I think it was some kilometers away."
In Ruicheng, 6 people died, 130 were injured, 500 houses collapsed and 100,000 were damaged, Xinhua said.
The quake was also felt in neighboring Hunan, Hubei and Anhui provinces, state television reported, while in the industrial hub of Wuhan, people frightened by the tremors rushed into the street, residents said.

Not likely. My guess is someone got a new warhead design and decided to test it.
Wonder how well shielded it was - if there's reports of EMP damage in the area, then we'll *know* what it was, for sure.
Yup, and it's right about where you'd expect someone to put a test silo.
Earthquake in Central China Kills 11
BEIJING (AP) -- A magnitude 5.7 earthquake shook part of central China on Saturday, killing at least 11 people, state media and an official said.
The official Xinhua News Agency said the quake happened at 8:49 a.m., with the epicenter in Ruichang, a city of 420,000 in Jiangxi province.
An official reached at the State Seismological Bureau who refused to give his name said 11 people were killed. He said it was not clear yet how many were injured.
"The earthquake this morning was quite scary," said a shopkeeper in Ruichang reached by telephone who would only give her surname Zhou. She said a few one- and two-story buildings collapsed and many taller ones showed cracks in their facades.
Many people in Ruichang were staying outside for fear of aftershocks. She said she felt a milder trembling of the earth around 1:00 p.m.
The United States National Earthquake Information Center reported the quake was magnitude 5.5.

Maybe this has something to do with it?

Ah yes, communism at its best.
No, not since "market reforms" several years ago.
There was a story posted a couple days ago about a peasant woman who suffered a stroke, and the family couldn't afford to leave her in the hospital any longer, so SENT HER TO BE CREMATED.
The mortician saw tears in her eyes, and called a halt, and notified authorities.
My first thought.
8000 buildings collapsed?
Yeah. Uhhh... Yeah.
Six people dead?
One of these figures is damned wrong.
Of course, it could well be a bunch of crappy huts.
Not tens of thousands dead, then. Say a thousand or so. Happens all the time in China.
And if not, then we'll 'know' it was just one of their burning coal deposits collapsing in on itself.
(Denny Crane: "I Don't Want To Socialize With A Pinko Liberal Democrat Commie.Say What You Like About Republicans. We Stick To Our Convictions. Even When We Know We're Dead Wrong.")
Another of my pet peeves (I guess the media is having a 'tick Karen off' weekend). I suppose it's possible that all those buildings collapsed and the people died AFTER the earthquake, and since I wasn't there I can't really assert otherwise, but it seems far more likely that those events occurred DURING the earthquake. Exactly how many people succumbed to H5N1 after the earthquake will probably never be known. That is making me a little edgy.
That's why we don't have our buildings made in China. Who cares if toys collapse.
How do over 8000 buildings go down and so few die?
Yes, that's what they get for building directly on
The George Bush's Fault.
