WAUKEGAN — The sale of air guns will have to be reported to police under a new law being considered by the City Council.
The council voted Monday to have a law drafted requiring stores in the city to provide police with the names and addresses of buyers of air rifles, air guns, BB guns, pellet guns and carbon dioxide (C02)-powered weapons.
The measure is supported by police, said Waukegan Police Chief William Biang.
"We've had people shot with them. We've had some serious injuries," said Biang, speaking at the council meeting. "We just arrested three kids shooting out windows of cars and houses (with pellet guns)."
First Ward Ald. Sam Cunningham, Public Safety Committee chairman, said he recently saw five mask-wearing boys on the street with BB guns that resembled semi-automatic and pump-action weapons.
"They looked very real," he said. "They make senior citizens nervous."
The new law "puts the burden on the seller to notify us when a gun is sold," Biang said. "By being notified, we can take some proactive steps ... If we see windows shot out we'll know where to start looking."
The council voted unanimously to have an ordinance drafted.

Well, a right is just a privilege the courts are inclined to let you have, if there's a reason for you to have it.
And as to this blurb: "We just arrested three kids shooting out windows of cars and houses (with pellet guns)." Me thinks the Chief is exaggerating as in Waukegan the houses and cars don't HAVE any windows - as they've already been shot out.
When BB's are outlawed, only outlaws will have BB's. : )

Well, this is Waukegan-- not exactly the safest place in the world. And they do have a problem -- they've got mask-wearing punks out in the streets shooting people and damaging property. Not exactly Ralphie shooting targets in his back yard. I had both headlight lenses on my car shattered by BBs when the car was parked in front of my house, so I'm not really ready to jump on the Second Amendment bandwagon here on behalf of these fun-loving youths.
Having said that, I don't think that registering air rifles is going to make a dime's worth of difference in regard to Waukegan's problems. The problems are a little deeper and more serious than that.
I'll just pay in cash. I guess I'll just have to hire a 12 year old to go in and buy one.
