LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Distressed by thoughts of war, terrorism and natural disasters? Maybe an uplifting movie will take the edge off.

For its ninth annual celebration of cinema, the American Film Institute aims to uncover the "most inspirational films of the century."

"When times are darkest, during war and depression, movies ... provide a remarkable way for us to find ourselves again," said Jean Picker Firstenberg, AFI's director and chief executive. "We need to feel good again, and that's how these movies make us feel."

That certainly is one hell of a book. Steinbeck's Great American Novel. Ain't never seen the picture, though.

A fella's got to do what a fella's got to do.

I don't think you can mention Song of the South, let alone screen it, without getting into serious trouble with the PC police.

Good luck finding a movie from the last 30 years.

Oh, come on. Fahrenheit 9/11 was extremely uplifting doncha know. I've never seen it, but it shoots tinglies up my spine just thinking about all the intellectual capital invested in that piece. Piece of what I'll omit.

To me these are all inspirational. The order I have listed them in means nothing. Please note that I have included no film of recent vintage:

Inn of the Sixth Happiness
Sergeant York
Imitation of Life
Pride of the Yankees
Of Human Hearts
Florence Nightingale
It's a Wonderful Life
Heidi
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Yankee Doodle Dandy
Song of Bernadette

Vertigo is a film of genius but how is it inspiring?

"Band of Brothers"-- I watch it every time it comes on. It's great, and the interviews with it are outstanding.

Because at the end, Stewart has conquered his vertigo--which symbolizes his fear of marriage and commitment. When he steps out on that ledge on the belltower, we know he will return and marry Barbara Bel Geddes. The film is about conquering fear.
