FINDLAY, Ohio, Sept. 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Marathon Oil Corporation MRO announced today that it expects a mid-November 2005 completion of its Detroit Refinery's $300 million expansion and clean fuels project. Through the combined efforts of the City of Detroit, the State of Michigan and Marathon, a Renaissance Zone was created that enabled the Company to advance the expansion efforts and investment in the refinery.

"This is the culmination of several years of work by hundreds of Marathon employees and contractors. We are in the final phase of the project and are eager to complete this construction, which not only provides additional supply of motor fuels, but also brings cleaner burning fuels to consumers in the Michigan area," said Gary R. Heminger, executive vice president of Marathon and president of Marathon Petroleum Company LLC. ------------------------------------------------------------------- snip ----------------------------------------------------

Expansion of this refinery from 74,000 to 100,000 barrels per day is expected later this month. That will add about 1 million gallons per day of gasoline production into the upper midwest, resulting in lower gasoline prices in the years ahead. This is a special post for those who want quick results and don't want to wait three years for Marathon's Garyville, LA refinery expansion to be completed.

Huh?

Exactly.
No hurricanes in Michigan.
No refinery damages
No interruptions, gas price increases, etc.

Great!

Any enviro antics in the courts that prevent Marathon from lighting it off anticipated?

LOL! What do they call it, "Hell Night," or something like that? I didn't hear anything about this year's celebrations...how many buildings were burned down?

No way. I would think all that enviro-litigation ended before this project started. Good businessmen wait until all the legal hurdles are cleared before they start investing their capital. That's one reason why no new refineries have been started in the last 25 years. But there have been a lot of expansions like this one.

The number of fires reported in Detroit this year was below the average number of calls on a normal night.

The number of calls has been below that of an average night for quite a few years now. The previous mayor did a pretty good job focusing on stopping the arsons and riots... I'm still waiting for things to fall apart under Kwame and his hip-hop thugs, though....

The UAW flattened it pretty good.

I've passed by this refinery a hundred times. Where does the crude come from to feed this refinery?

I don't know, but if I had to guess I'd say the crude oil is probably from wells in Oklahoma and Kansas. Some of it could even be produced in Michigan. I know there are a number of natural gas wells in Michigan and they may be producing some oil too.

There is not much crude in Michigan. I was just wondering if there was a crude pipeline to Detroit from Oklahoma/Texas to feed this refinery.

I'm not for sure, but it's probably crude from the Tar Sands deposits in Northern Alberta near Fort MacMurray.

Well, let's hope the Democrats can energize their base and burn more buildings next year.
