Public Opinion on Alito Similar to that of Miers
SeaMax News ^ | 11/2/2005 | Robert Demick

In a new Gallup poll, Americans are split on the selection of Samuel Alito to replace Sandra Day O’Connor, with 43% believing that the selection is either excellent or good, while 39% believe that the selection was fair or poor.

About half of Americans feel positively about Alito as a person, with a small minority, only 19% of those polled, disliking him personally. About half of those polled also feel that his views are mainstream, and only 25% feel that his views are too extreme.

The most pressing issue for Alito seems to be that of the possible reversal of Roe v. Wade. While Americans are split as to whether they believe if he would or would not vote to overturn the decision, the majority of them would not want the Senate to confirm him if it was discovered that he would vote to overturn it.

All of these statistics are very similar to the initial response given regarding Harriet Miers’ nomination. They are also significantly lower to the response initially given to John Roberts’ nomination, when he was first selected to replace Sandra Day O’Connor. As with Roberts, Americans feel that there is nothing wrong with a man replacing the first female to sit on the Supreme Court.

The views expressed in the poll follow party lines, especially with regards to the possible reversal of Roe v. Wade. The great majority of Republicans and conservatives would still want confirmation if he wanted to overturn the decision, while even greater majorities of Democrats, independents, moderates, and liberals would then be opposed to confirmation.

I'm surprised that 39% know who Alito is... and most of those probably had not heard of him four days ago.

Ah yea. Public opinion.
We all do no end of feeling and we mistake it for thinking. And out of it we get an aggregation which we consider a boon. Its name is public opinion. It is held in reverence. It settles everything. Some think it is the voice of God. --Mark Twain
Quite right Mr. Twain. Especially today in our 24/7 Newsworld.

Partisanship. If you're a Republican, he's the second coming automatically. If you're a Dem, he's Satan incarnate.

Amazing, isn't it? I saw the "snap judgement syndrome" raise its ugly head on the Harriet Miers threads within an hour of learning of her nomination. Guess some folks are just psychic, or psycho. ;)

A poll like that means nothing.  Yeah, we all know about Alito, and Janice Rogers Brown, and Luttig, McConnell, Clement, Owens, etc.  But the average citizen knows next to nothing about Alito.  I just sat in my company's breakroom listening to a brain trust try and figure out who Rosa Parks was (FYI- she's Martin Luther King's wife.)

These are the people who are queried for these polls.

Q: Do you support the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito who represents the Far Right, Papists, Anti-Abortion Extremists, Rich Republicans, Tom Delay, and the failed War on Terror; to seize the seat of the Moderate Justice Sandra Day O'Connor?

Show me the questions, and who asked them. Where was the poll conducted, and when?

Remember what Twain said: "...Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics..."

It seems that the vast majority of people are either happy or neutral with this pick.

This 'poll' is:

Except for us political junkies (of both sides), 'Americans' don't know squat, nor do they want to, or even care - as to whom Dubya picks for the Supreme Court.

Heck most 'Americans' don't know who their Senators are, or even their Representative, let alone about some Third Circuit Appellate Court Judge from New Jersey.

I was just talking yesterday to a friend of mine who was annoyed by some biased poll showing over 70% of Americans think the war isn't being run correctly. We were discussing how completely useless such polls are, and exactly how many of the respondents actually went to West Point and studied war tactics, had military experience of any kind, or failing all that, could even find Iraq on a map. I told him it was as meaningful as if my computer were running slowly, so I asked 500 random ignorant strangers what they thought, and 63% said the hard drive needed to be replaced, so that must be the problem.

I know, 99.5% did not even know who he was and can form an opinion?

I'm shocked. SHOCKED I tell you, that the country is divided.

Yet, if we are to believe the Democrats a moderate would have united us. ROTFLMAO!

I would like to know the actual numbers for each category:
Excellent, good, fair, poor.

Because it is propaganda dressed in Goebbel's finest clothes.

It is also a result of the dumbed down education Americans receive from their public schools, and the fact that unfortunately many of our fellow citizens care more about what is on TV than to take the effort to learn anything on their own.

IMO

Alito sure gets around if that many people dislike him personally.
