Senate Coverage -- (November '05)
Thomas ^ | 11-01-05 | US Congress

Posted on 11/01/2005 5:12:40 AM PST by OXENinFLA

Since "Free Republic is an online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America.", I and others think it's a good idea to centralize what the goes on in the Senate (or House).

So if you see something happening on the Senate/House floor and you don't want to start a new thread to ask if anyone else just heard what you heard, you can leave a short note on who said what and about what and I'll try and find it the next day in THE RECORD. Or if you see a thread that pertains to the Senate, House, or pretty much any GOV'T agency please link your thread here.

If you have any suggestions for this thread please feel free to let me know.

Here's a few helpful links.

C-SPAN what a great thing. Where you can watch or listen live to most Government happenings.

C-SPAN 1 carries the HOUSE.

C-SPAN 2 carries the SENATE.

C-SPAN 3 (most places web only) carries a variety of committee meetings live or other past programming.

OR FEDNET has online feed also.

A great thing about our Government is they make it really easy for the public to research what the Politicians are doing and saying (on the floor anyway).

THOMAS where you can see a RECORD of what Congress is doing each day. You can also search/read a verbatim text of what each Congressmen/women or Senator has said on the floor or submitted 'for the record.' [This is where the real juicy stuff can be found.]

Also found at Thomas are Monthly Calendars for the Senate Majority and Senate Minority

And Monthly Calendars for the House Majority and Roll Call Votes can be found here.

Graham will clarify that his amendment does not preclude appeal to SCOTUS.

First, noted that it has been tradition for 200 years that enemy combatants have NOT had recourse to civilian courts.

Graham notes that SCOTUS can receive cert pertitions from the DC Court (not the same as getting Cert. from the loser).

Specter says that SCOTUS has no jurisdiction based on the plain language of the amendment (DCCA has exclusive jurisdiction), and Specter has an objection in general to what is referred to as "court stripping." Specter is a real problem, IMO.

I hope this amendment passes. It is better than status quo, i.e., it strips a right of appeal in civilian courts that SCOTUS has granted to enemy combatants.

Texans Turn Out In Droves for Reid, Biden and Obama, Oh My!

Today the DSCC held a fabulously well-attended Democratic Party reception and rally in Dallas, Texas. Hard to say how many attended the rally, but I'm guessing it was in the thousands. Here is a picture of part of the crowd, just to give you an idea:

Graham S.AMND.2524 looks like certain passage. Clinton, Dodd, Obama voted AYE, as have most of the GOP Senators. Hatch, AYE.

After this amendment vote, on to the entire bill, as amended, then done for the day.

I just got home and read the thread...I am sick ..and I didn't even watch the "debates"....

Cboldt...I appreciate you pointing out the "technicalities" of these amendments...and I know I am one of the 99% you referred to earlier...

Being one of the 99%, I must say that regardless whether the Warner Amendment "changes" the way things are done or not...the PERCEPTION is that the Senate has taken control of the war, in order to make changes....

which means in the MSM that they are "fixing" President Bush's lousy, mistake of a war...

THEY have handed the dems, media and anti-war crowd and HUGH victory today...and I am sorry if the "nuance" doesn't bother you, but it bothers me...

and you watch how this Warner Amendment is described in the media...and see if you still are blase about this..l.

I agree with you! I was listening to Rush (er, his guest host), just got back to my office, and my station here has CNN news at the top and half of the hour. Harry Ried is declaring victory, and the media, or CNN in this case, is calling it an attempt to limit the problems with this war, being Oh-So-Very-Unpopular, 2000 soliders killed, no WMD found, Bush lied, etc, etc.

They are spinning it, and we're doing what? Helping them!!!

Whether anyone here likes it or not, or cares to acknowledge it or not, we are at war with the MSM. The MSM are not fair, and are not here to tell folks what is happening. They have an AGENDA.

Thank you....I knew, not matter how the amendment was actually worded...or whether there was even any actionable changes made...

THE DEMS would claim victory...and why??? because that stupid idiot Warner AGREED to the DEMS amendment (with changes)...the dems kept saying last night on the Senate floor...the REpublicans have "agreed" to our amendment...

BTW...I checked the vote...these are the Republicans that are the ONLY true patriots IMHO...they voted NO for both amendments.

Burr
Coburn
Demint
Graham
Inhofe
Isaakson
Kyl
McCain
Sessions
Thune
Vitter

Good...as soon as the little one goes down for a nap, I am going to call his office as welll...

I am really disappointed in Cornyn and Allen. They both voted for the Warner Amendment...and they should KNOW what the effect of that amendment will be...and already is.

The dems are claiming victory...and you know what? I think they have the right to for a change....sigh, sigh.

Please add my other GA Senator, Saxby Chambliss to voting NO for both amendments.

I was livid when I didn't see his mame on your list. I double checked and both Georgia Senators voted NO on both amendments.

I went back and checked to see if I had made any more mistakes...and sure enough...I had missed Bunning.

Thanks for getting me to check...I think I will leave reporting to more responsible freepers from now on.
