NOAA announced today that tests of white shrimp samples collected the week of September 12 from Mississippi Sound found no elevated contaminants. The agency collected 23 samples of white shrimp from Mobile Bay to Lake Borgne two weeks after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf coast. The samples were tested for hydrocarbon exposure due to oil spills or urban runoffs and other contaminants, such as PCBs and DDTs.

As far as the shrimping industry. There are plenty of boats waiting to get out and get shrimp, but the problem is a lot of the processing plants were wiped out or down in the hard hit areas. Ice houses not working because of electricity or water. Getting fuel for the vessels, etc. Getting the shrimp is easy. Getting them to market is the task.
Shhhh. Don't tell everyone. I'm enjoying my shrimp platters.
Oh that is great news. The shrimpers are getting back up and running in Cameron Parish, and I'm ready to get some to restock the freezer. They say that the year after Audrey was one of the best shrimping years they had because the nutrients were stirred up from the storm.
I read where the oyster beds weren't contaminated either. The worst damage from the hurricane was the hype from the MSM.
BUT BUT BUT
What about that toxic soup? I read and heard that seafood from the Mississippi Sound would be contaminated for several years. MSM wrong? Again??
And and and what about the Black Shrimp? Do I see a pattern of discrimination here?
The shrimping has been very good to those able to work of the mouth of the river as well. They had do work around lots of debris and the bodies of dead cattle. Those that are still in business should do well if the prices hold against the prices of imports.
Good news, but I think I'll stick to the Asian shrimp for the next year or so, and avoid oysters for longer than that.
