The judge presides over the jury and handles any hearings or orders that are needed. But in terms of who is and isn't indicted, I don't think he has much influence.

The stranger - purportedly Larry Johnson - asked Novak questions about the Wilson case, and then reportedly went to Wilson and told him about his conversation with Novak. I saw this in a thread last week and don't remember what was specifically said or who/what the source was. This MIGHT have been when Wilson first learned his wife had been mentioned by anyone.

One thing I never thought of before is that Wilson immediately floated the self-serving "outing-my-wife-to-silence-me" interpretation of events, which the MSM latched onto like a boa constrictor. But maybe this spin was put out to insulate Wilson and Plame from any serious inquiry into who at the CIA ultimately sent him to Niger, and what the real reason was. Maybe Wilson didn't want his wife's role known because that would open up a can of worms.

Unfortunately for Novak, the stranger turns out to be a good friend of Joseph Wilson, who quickly receives word of the exchange.

In a strange twist in the investigation, the grand jury -- acting on a tip from Wilson -- has questioned a person who approached Novak on Pennsylvania Avenue on July 8, 2003, six days before his column appeared in The Post and other publications, Wilson said in an interview. The person, whom Wilson declined to identify to The Post, asked Novak about the "yellow cake" uranium matter and then about Wilson, Wilson said. He first revealed that conversation in a book he wrote last year. In the book, he said that he tried to reach Novak on July 8, and that they finally connected on July 10. In that conversation, Wilson said that he did not confirm his wife worked for the CIA but that Novak told him he had obtained the information from a "CIA source."

Novak told the person that Wilson's wife worked for the CIA as a specialist in weapons of mass destruction and had arranged her husband's trip to Niger, Wilson said. Unknown to Novak, the person was a friend of Wilson and reported the conversation to him, Wilson said.

Short-term, likely. But he won't exactly come out smelling like a rose if there are no convictions in the end.

My guess is that Fitzy told the judge that there will be no indictments and he needs to know if he can issue a report explaining the evidence and why there are to be no indictments.

A guest on Hannity's show today, advanced the same theory but stated that it was accually a covert operation by the CIA against the White House, to discredit the president and CYA the CIA for lousy inteligence in the lead-up to the war. Claims the CIA says Tennant was not involved, did not know of Wilson etc........sure bet that he did.

Too late...I already wrote the thriller on Wilson (Post #42) LOL! Now for the rest of the story...

Wilson (as Ambassador to Gabon) had/has connections to the Gabon Chief of State, Omar Bongo, who was the chief African ally of the French oil company TotalFinaElf, a major beneficiary of the Oil-for-Food bribes. Prior to the Iraq War, they had a contract with Saddam's regime worth an estimated 12.5 to 27.0 billion barrels of oil reserves. Also he had connections via the Middle East Institute and Rock Creek, both of which are Saudi controlled.

Wilson's wife Jacqueline was also apparently a lobbyist for Bongo and it seems Wilson was pretty chummy with Saddam's weapons buyer, having dinner with him on the eve that Kuwait was invaded in 1990. That makes it very clear that there are connections to oil-for-food. No wonder Wilson can afford his lifestyle.
