Maybe never. Literally touching those files in the manner we used to is never going to happen again. The best I can do is import them into the database. Doing so, by pulling apart the articles and the comments, is no easy task. After an unsuccessful attempt I reconsidered the cost/benefit and other concerns and decided it wasn't worth it.

Hmmm. Ok, thanks for the answer.

I figured it may be something like that. It's a shame.

php's similar_text works well to compare strings, and will give as a percentage the similarity between the two.

Latin1, the default. I've already reset (to default) ft_min_word_len and did a REPAIR TABLE (same as myisamchk --recover). It still crashed. I'll try dropping and rebuilding the table tonight if we're still having problems. This problem may accelerate my desire to relocate the search tables to a dedicated search machine.

I feel your pain ;-) Intermittent unreproducible mystery bugs are hell.

A long time ago, when I was first learning UNIX, I went to a class on system administration at Digital. While discussing time services and how time is syncronized across multiple serverss, I noticed a discussion in the Man pages (Man is Unix's online help subsystem) about how DEC had implemnted NTP (Network Time Protocol).

It seems that when the servers were booted, which ever server was so designated was the Master time server. He would provide time to any of the Slaves that asked for it. If, for some reason, the Master became unavailable, the Slaves would hold an "election" amongst themselves and elect a new "Master", who would then provide services until the designated Master came back online and asserted its authority.

For some reason, the slaves holding an election of a master has stuck with me ever since.

"I just now did the little dance to bring it back, we'll see how this goes."

Did you remember to use the entrails of the trolls arrayed in the holy symbols, and to rattle the marble filled troll skull over the systems afterwards?

Hang in there, big guy. This is why Systems Administrators spend periods of time subsisting on delivery pizza and caffeinated soft drinks. You start mainlining Jolt and we're gonna haveta call Jim for an intervention...

Probably because ever since then you've noticed that it's mirrored and actualized in real life.

I am very surprised that you would put a non-production ready version of a DB in such a critical place. I have no plans to use MySQL until a month or so after the official release. Even their website says 'use this for previewing and testing new features.'

Over the last two days I've upgraded both database servers to the very nearly almost production ready 5.0.13 version of MySQL.

Oh...disregard my previous message.

Didn't know you were running 5.x.
