The newest version of MySQL now more closely rivals PostgreSQL. Not knowing the version you currently use or how it is implemented, you may want to look into the upgrade.
However, for the longer term, you may want to explore more "business robust" open-source DBMS environments such as PostgreSQL and Ingres. Unfortunately, there would likely be minor SQL implementation differences (why can't SQL be totally standard?!).
In my humble opinion, any of these options would be a viable choice for the type of data demands you have on Free Republic. For read speeds, you may find Ingres to be the fastest for the reliability, with PostgreSQL next in line. My SQL trades off a bit in robustness of data for pure speed. It is a nice tradeoff for low-end servers, but not so much for more critical environments.
Finally, I know for business use MySQL requires a business license to be safe. It is not a big cost (hundreds of dollars). But PostgreSQL is totally free and it appears Ingres would possibly be the same now.

I'm sorry to not have noticed post 46, in which you mentioned more database information.
I encourage you to go forward with the new implementation if possible, as that will have to be done soon, anyway.
Jim, I hope the best for you and your other development guys. But I would still push you a bit toward prototyping on one of the other two environments in the future. They are inherently more reliable (fully ACID-compliant!).

When I saw the Bisquick announcement on the main forum I thought we were having a pancake breakfast. :-)

I kept wondering why there was a biscuit shortage. I need something to eat with my tea.
