Venezuela seeks nuclear technology-(what every oil country needs)
washington times ^ | October 17, 2005 | Rowan Scarborough

The Venezuelan government has made overtures to various countries about obtaining nuclear technology, according to U.S. officials, who worry that President Hugo Chavez might be taking the first steps in a long road to develop nuclear weaponry. A Bush administration official monitoring Latin America said the entreaties have included communications with Iran, with whom Venezuela maintains increasingly close ties.

Well, I think the "blackmail" option is out of date. One unfortunate fallout from the way we've handled Iraq vs. N. Korea is that those who have nukes don't get invaded.

But I don't think that's the issue for Venezuela. There's a vast difference in infrastructure and technical expertise between having a power plant and having the capability of producing weapons-grade plutonium. Probably far easier to buy a small bomb on the black market if you're interested in terrorism.

The real question is peak oil - and do their geologists suspect that they may be near peak production? Both Iran and V. going "nuclear" for domestic consumption makes sense in that scenario. The oil will be far more remunerative for export at that point.

Chavez is unquestionable demented. Anyone turning this idiot loose with anything that is or can become destructive should have his backside kicked up around his shoulders.

I think we need to quit being so dependent on foreign oil. A couple years of cheaper gas, and then, three years later, even that dog biscuit stops when Chavez has what he wants out of the deal.

Heck no. Both about assassinating this goon and Chavez's chummy relations with Iran for nukes. Why do two oil exporters, Iran and Venezuela, need nuclear energy? We know darn well why.

"That Chavez is a desperate Axis of Evil wannabe."

And if Bush actually does help him with a 'peaceful' nuclear program...?

BTW, the above address doesn't work. Sorry [time pressure at the time]. But this link does work:

CNN.com - Bush appears open to Venezuela nuclear power
http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/americas/11/02/venezuela.ap/?section=cnn_world

Nov 2, 2005

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Despite tense relations with Venezuela, President George W. Bush says it might be OK for the South American nation to have a nuclear reactor for peaceful energy uses.

Bush acknowledged he had not heard about Venezuela's request for a reactor when asked about it Tuesday in an interview with Latin American reporters ... But he didn't reject the idea... [snip]

Ah, I read a little further. OK, Bush did think on his feet, although perhaps he shouldn't have sounded like he didn't know. But here, and the last post on the subject unless I find something big

Bush: "I guess if I were a taxpayer in Venezuela, I would wonder about the energy supply that Venezuela has," Bush said. "But maybe it makes sense. I haven't really studied the proposal."
