Cop suspended in beating had psychiatric treatment
The Times Picayune ^ | Oct 14, 2005 | By Michael Perlstein

One of the three New Orleans police officers suspended and charged in connection with the videotaped beating of a retired teacher in the French Quarter received psychiatric treatment after an apparent suicide attempt in the mid-1990s, but was hired as a cop about a year later when he passed the department's psychological tests, according to his attorney and three people who worked with the officer before he joined the force.

Lance Schilling, charged with simple battery along with fellow 8th District officers Robert Evangelist and Stewart Smith, was treated after he fell ill from self-inflicted carbon monoxide inhalation, according to three people he worked with at the Rendon Inn, a Broadmoor restaurant and bar.

Steve Daney, a former cook who described Schilling as "a good, good friend," said Schilling had bouts of depression, but he had never known him to be violent or even discourteous. As for the apparent suicide attempt, Daney said, "He was young. He was 18 or 19 years old. We all go through those kind of issues when we're young and we think the world is falling apart."

Joseph Bruno, attorney for beating victim Robert Davis, said he forwarded information about Schilling's psychiatric history to the FBI, which is helping in the police investigation and a parallel civil rights investigation by the U.S. Justice Department. He said that despite the length of time since the 1990s incident involving Schilling, the background is relevant.

Bad Cop.

What did he resist...? was he under arrest for something or did he resist getting a beating from cops.

He was punching an old man in the face.

Why?

Because the old man didn't show him respect.

That cop needs to go to jail.

There are no indications the guy was drunk.

The PC approach to police business:

Good Drunk.

Bad Cop.

And in this case it should also be the conservative approach.

I don't know what happened before the vidoe started rolling, but I saw a cop throw 4 fast punches to the guys head. His resistance was basically protecting his head.

Later, another cop went after a reporter for filming the attack on the old guy.

I saw the video too. Was the guy just supposed to stand there and be a punching bag? I support cops when they are in the right. These guys were beating the crap out of a 64 year-old man. Good grief.

Yeah that's what I saw. No way to excuse the behavior of those thugs in uniform but some people will certainly try.

64 is not old. Would it have been any different if it had been a 34 yo? NO police have been out of control for years, and documentaries have been made about them.

His resistance was basically protecting his head.

Well, yeah. For the bootlickers, any attempt to protect yourself from the beating justifies further beating.

The cops on this video were definitely over the line.

There is so much wrong with their actions, I don't know where to start.

his action of resistance is unquestionable. when an officer tells you to put your hands up, lay down, get out of the car, etc etc etc, you must obey. that is the social contract and the courts have upheld such thinking. note to you, dont resist police orders and you will not have a problem.
