Actually, I had completely forgotten about that hideous monument that he built to himself. Thanks very much for adding relevant and interesting perspective.

I agree with you that her greed was obscene. Do you think she is the only one? Do you actually think that graft, greed and the obscenities of corruption are gone?

The Aquino family that replaced her owns incalculable acres of land and yet the promised land reform hope for many that supported them, especially tribal people, and they received nothing other than government promises and turmoil.

I knew people that were killed by the NPA. I knew Martin Burnham.

I can guarantee you that even if these jewels are sold (and I have no problem with this), the effect will be zero to none for the average citizen of the P.I.

You mean that all of those shoes are just rotting away in a museum? They WILL rot, especially in that country, even with the occasional polish. Shoes are meant to be worn -- just for a while, then tossed when they wear out. Temporary beauty.
What a waste of her beautiful shoes.
SHE should rot away.

I apologize - I came across as a little too stiff in my comments.

You say that " What I am saying is that all is not wine and roses since the Marcos left power. In some ways, things are worse."

That is probably true. There are pros and cons about the Philippines...

Pros: Subic, a beautiful area, will soon have an international airport. This means more construction and more tourism. Also, money from overseas Filipinos continues to flow back into the country, which helps their economy a great deal. Highspeed Internet is widely available, also a good sign

Cons: China is now cheaper than Philippines for many manufacturers, and they have a billion people and a lot more land. Chinese stuff is so cheap, it even gets imported into the Philippines! Military strength not what it should be, and their pullout of Iraq, symbolic as it was, is a bad sign. Dependence on foreign energy sources, closeness to Malaysia ( == Muslims), and difficulty in buying property (you have to be quite well off to buy anything) are bad things.
